Saniya Rivers leaves game in wheelchair after scary ankle injury against Lynx

The Connecticut Sun endured more misery than another loss on Wednesday night, as their 86-80 defeat to the Minnesota Lynx was overshadowed by a frightening moment involving second-year guard Saniya Rivers. Rivers had to be helped off the floor in a wheelchair after suffering a severe left ankle injury that occurred during a drive to the basket. The crowd at Mohegan Sun Arena fell quiet as teammates and medical staff scrambled to Rivers following an awkward landing, the scene underscored by the moment her shoe flew off in the aftermath of the collision.
Initial reports of the injury carried a glimmer of relief, but as the incident unfolded, it quickly emerged as one of the most significant storylines from Wednesday’s WNBA slate. The incident happened with 7:16 remaining in the second quarter when Rivers attempted to finish a layup, only to be met at the rim by Minnesota forward Nia Coffey, who delivered a clean block. Rivers came down awkwardly on her left foot, violently rolling her ankle, and the impact was so severe that her shoe was knocked completely off.
Rivers immediately clutched her leg in obvious pain as medical personnel rushed to the baseline. Teammates gathered nearby, shielding her with towels as she received treatment. After several minutes, trainers wheeled out a wheelchair, and Rivers was escorted off the floor with a towel draped over her head for privacy. Connecticut later announced that she would not return due to a left ankle sprain. Head coach Rachid Meziane noted after the game that Rivers had also absorbed contact to her face during the play, though he provided no definitive timeline for her return, saying only that the ankle would be evaluated the following day.
Despite departing the arena in a wheelchair, there was a portion of cautious optimism when the Sun revealed the injury as a sprain rather than a fracture. Additional tests scheduled for Thursday were to determine the injury’s severity and any potential timeline for Rivers’ return.
Rivers, the No. 8 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft out of NC State, has been a rising figure for Connecticut this season. Heading into Wednesday’s game, she averaged 6.9 points, 3.2 assists and 23 minutes per game, starting 12 of the Sun’s first 21 contests. Her combination of athleticism, defensive versatility and playmaking had already established her as one of the team’s promising young contributors. Before leaving the game, Rivers had accumulated five points, one rebound, two assists, two steals and one block, a stat line that underscored the impact she had on the floor in a challenging game for Connecticut. The Sun also played without Brittney Griner, who sat out due to a strained left quadriceps, and forward presence that could have further influenced the night’s outcomes.
This development marks another setback for Connecticut as they navigate a competitive season, seeking to leverage Rivers’ development and versatility as a key piece of their backcourt. The team’s medical updates in the days ahead would determine how quickly Rivers might be available again, with fans and analysts watching closely for any signs of progress. In the meantime, Wednesday’s game served as a stark reminder of the fragility of sports, where a single moment can shift momentum and alter a team’s trajectory as hope for a speedy and full recovery remains with Rivers and the Sun.
