LONDON – The Colts paid a steep price at the trade deadline 11 months ago for All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner to make big impact plays. They’re still waiting for his first interception as a Colt and the 2022 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year found himself on the wrong side of two deep strikes from Commanders rookie third-string quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis that led to seven points and 97 yards on back-to-back Washington plays Sunday.Gardner said both were the product of oversized aggression from him and rookie safety A.J. Haulcy and communication issues the Colts will have to fix.The first, a 48-yard strike to Treylon Burks on a double-move down the left sideline, became a touchdown, as Gardner slowed – or hesitated – midway through the route and fell multiple steps behind, leaving Haulcy as the only defender. By the time Burks caught the ball steps from the goal line, the Commanders wideout had gotten behind the Indianapolis safety, too.Buy Colts tickets“We’ve got to make sure we’re playing together. I feel like we responded well – we definitely responded well – but we’ve got to make sure we’re playing together,” Gardner said. “I heard a ‘ball, ball, ball’ call early, too, so I thought it was a back-shoulder (throw) at the beginning.”The latter part might explain his slowing down mid-play, as he appeared to turn and try to make a play on a ball that wasn’t there. Now only leading 17-13 midway through the third quarter, the Colts offense drove down just beyond midfield and tacked on Spencer Shrader’s second field goal of the game – this one from 52 yards – to push the lead back to a touchdown. But on Washington’s very next play from scrimmage, starting on their own 16-yard line, it looked for a second as if it might tie it up.On the play in question, Kaliakmanis scrambled in the pocket and then rolled right and launched a prayer down the right sideline to a streaking Dyami Brown, who had crept over the top of Gardner and Haulcy to the opposite 40-yard-line. As Brown stretched out his arms, the ball dropped straight in before Gardner muscled him to the ground. Had Kaliakmanis’ ball found his receiver in stride, it might’ve gone for a score to tie the game.As Gardner explained, with both safeties posted up high, he was given free rein to make an aggressive move and try to undercut the route, trusting help would be there. Unfortunately for the Colts, Brown beat Gardner and Haulcy.“We were just playing aggressive. I was aggressive. A.J. was aggressive. We were both being aggressive on that play, and we have to read the quarterback better,” Gardner said. “A.J. is trying to pick that ball off, and the next thing, (Brown’s) past him, and both of us are underneath it.“It happens. There’s a lot we’re going to learn from as a secondary from this game. If they’re around the logo, they’re probably about to take shots.”As a team Sunday, the Colts registered 10 passes broken up, and linebacker Jay
