​Schalke 04’s Maximilian Wöber reflects on remarkable ÖFB comebackMaximilian Wöber probably could not have scripted the moment much better. Schalke 04 were clinging to a 2-1 lead away at Union Berlin deep into stoppage time when the Austrian defender found himself doing something he had spent much of the previous year unable to do at all: sprinting freely across a Bundesliga pitch. He had entered primarily to defend. Wöber first spent a full Bundesliga season with Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2023/24, making 25 league appearances and scoring twice while working both centrally and on the left side of defense. A permanent Gladbach move ultimately proved too expensive. Leeds United reportedly demanded between €10m and €12m, forcing Wöber back to England.Another injury-disrupted campaign followed. When Werder Bremen brought him back to Germany in the summer of 2025, Wöber sounded convinced that his difficult spell was finally behind him. The Austrian famously described Germany as “paradise for a footballer” and spoke openly about wanting to restart his career in the Bundesliga.
