CINCINNATI (AP) — Zack Wheeler matched a career high with 14 strikeouts, while Kyle Schwarber powered the Phillies with his 31st homer of the season, the best in the majors, as Philadelphia defeated Cincinnati 4-1 on Tuesday night. The Phillies grabbed their first lead in the third inning when Trea Turner drove in a run with an RBI groundout, and Schwarber followed with a two-run homer that cleared the wall in right-center, capping a three-run frame.
The early scoring surge began with Derek Hill doubling and Justin Crawford singling to put two runners aboard, setting the stage for Turner’s sac fly in the eighth that brought home Edmundo Sosa and extended the Phillies’ cushion. Wheeler, now at 9-1 on the season, delivered seven innings on 104 pitches, yielding four hits, one earned run, and no walks, while striking out 14. Jhoan Duran closed it out with a perfect ninth inning, fanning all three batters to earn his 22nd save.
For Cincinnati, Eugenio Suárez connected for a solo homer in the seventh. Reds starter Andrew Abbott took the loss, falling to 5-5 after six innings in which he allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out eight. The Reds also received a notable effort from their bullpen, but the offense could not muster enough to overcome Wheeler’s dominance.
On Wednesday, Chase Burns (10-1, 2.40 ERA) is slated to start for the Reds, while Philadelphia has yet to announce its starter for the game. The two teams will continue their series with Burns looking to build on his recent success against a Philadelphia lineup that has shown potent power and disciplined hitting in key moments of this matchup.
