Scotland international goalkeeper Angus Gunn has moved to Major League Soccer title contenders San Jose Earthquakes after being released by Nottingham Forest. The 30-year-old, who has earned 25 caps for Scotland, has agreed to a contract that runs through the end of the 2030 MLS season. San Jose, managed by Bruce Arena, currently occupy second place in the Western Conference 15 games into the campaign, trailing Vancouver Whitecaps on goal difference but with one additional game played. The Earthquakes also sit third in the overall league table, and Gunn has voiced his ambition to help the team chase silverware.
“It feels incredible to join the Earthquakes,” Gunn said on the club’s website. “Coming off the World Cup, which was an unbelievable experience, I’m really excited and grateful for the opportunity to come to San Jose and show the best version of myself. We’re in a really good position for the play-offs, so hopefully we can focus on that with the right mentality.”
Gunn’s arrival comes after a World Cup where he played in all three of Scotland’s group games in the United States. He started with a clean sheet in the 1-0 victory over Haiti, followed by a 1-0 defeat to Morocco and a 3-0 loss to Brazil. Earthquakes head coach Arena expressed his delight at adding a goalkeeper with Premier League and World Cup pedigree, saying the club is eager to integrate him for the second half of the season.
“We’re looking forward to integrating him into the club for the second half of the season,” Arena stated. The Earthquakes resume MLS action on Wednesday, July 22, when they host Orlando City.
Gunn’s career began at Manchester City, after which he had two spells with Norwich City and also represented Southampton and Stoke City. He joined Nottingham Forest in August, departing Norwich, but made only one substitute appearance for Forest before his move to San Jose.
At San Jose, Gunn will compete for a starting berth with a trio of goalkeepers: 32-year-old Brazilian Daniel, and 34-year-old American Earl Edwards Jr., as the Earthquakes weigh up the best option to help them chase the MLS crown. Gunn’s experience at club level in England, combined with his appearances for Scotland on the international stage, adds a layer of credibility to a squad aiming to translate their strong form into a deep playoff run and potential title challenge.
