Sean O’Malley is tired of having to wait for his weight division to get moving again.“Suga” has legitimate reasons to be annoyed. He just won a big fight at the UFC White House event that put him back within striking distance of a bantamweight title shot. But before that can happen, former champ Merab Dvalishvili has to get his rematch against current champ Petr Yan, who took the belt off Merab in December at UFC 323.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementO’Malley has a win over Yan from 2022 that he believes puts him in the batter’s box after Yan vs. Dvalishvili 3. But waiting leaves O’Malley twiddling his thumbs until 2027.“What the f–k, is Petr the champ, is he active, I don’t know,” O’Malley ranted in a new YouTube video. “Merab was active AF, Petr’s been out for a while. They fought in December. It’s been January, February, March, April, May, June, July. It’s been seven months. That’s not terrible for a champion, but the division is on fire right now. We need our champion back and he’s not. He’s out there getting hair transplants and hanging out with ladyboys. It’s pissing me off!”“God, Petr. If they don’t fight by October, I might just claim to be champion and defend my belt in December.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementFighters love to make fun of Petr Yan for living in Thailand, acting like he’s just on permanent vacation out there doing God knows what. But a quick look at his Instagram account shows just how hard “No Mercy” is working to get back into the cage. Video after video has Yan rehabbing his body.“Continue to recover after 2 surgeries in 5 months,” Yan wrote on one clip. “We are working and not giving up!”Yan underwent a nine hour back surgery in January and a second surgery sometime after that. Previous reports had him expecting to return by late summer, but no announcements have been made yet. Merab Dvalishvili has been just as antsy as Sean O’Malley, and he recently competed at an RAF event in Georgia. That wouldn’t have happened if there was a chance the UFC might announce Yan vs. Dvalishvili 3 for August, and we haven’t heard any whispers that the fight could end up on UFC 331 in September. Here’s hoping we get an update soon on Yan’s return and the bantamweight title picture starts moving again. Going from Merab Dvalishvili putting his title on the line four times in 2025 to zero bantamweight title defenses in 2026 sucks. But as they say in this sport, it is what it is.
