See where USA TODAY ranked FSU’s Mike Norvell among ACC head coaches

The ACC is a league of contrasts when it comes to coaching stability. In this conference, some leaders enjoy rock-solid job security, while others are staring down the possibility that 2026 could be their last year in their current city. USA TODAY Sports’ Austin Curtwright recently ranked all 17 ACC coaches, and his assessment of Florida State’s Mike Norvell—placed 13th in the conference—reflects the precarious position he currently occupies.
Norvell’s grading is tricky because he has delivered memorable highs alongside troubling lows. He guided the Seminoles to one of their strongest campaigns in recent memory in 2023, finishing 13-1 and capturing an ACC title. That season demonstrated his capability to maximize talent and execution, signaling that Florida State could be a consistent force again. Yet the program has also endured two seasons that fell well short of Florida State’s standards. Over the latest two-year stretch, the Seminoles have gone 7-17, including the historically poor 2024 campaign that ended with a 2-10 record. Those declines have tempered earlier optimism and raised questions about whether Norvell can sustain success or if the program regresses again.
Norvell’s coaching tenure at Florida State has been a rollercoaster. He began with a rocky 3-6 mark in 2020 before finishing 5-7 in 2021. Progress appeared tangible in 2022, when the team rebounded to 10-3 and earned a Cheez-It Bowl victory, providing a glimpse of the potential that had many believing in brighter days ahead. The ascent continued into 2023, a peak year in which Florida State achieved an ACC Championship and earned a berth in the Orange Bowl with a 13-1 record. However, from 2024 onward, the trajectory tipped downward again, with a disastrous 2-10 season followed by a 5-7 showing in 2025. The pattern of alternating success and struggle complicates the evaluation of Norvell’s overall imprint on the program.
Presently, Norvell’s record at Florida State stands at 38-34 through his tenure in Tallahassee. The exact expectations from booster supporters versus university administration remain somewhat ambiguous, but the prevailing reality is clear: Norvell must deliver improved results if Florida State is to reclaim and maintain the level of performance fans and stakeholders expect on the field. The pressure to demonstrate sustained excellence is mounting, and how he responds in the upcoming seasons will likely determine whether he remains a fixture in Tallahassee or becomes a candidate for opportunities elsewhere.
