Serena Williams isn’t ready to walk away from professional tennis just yet. The 23-time Grand Slam champion has shifted her focus after Wimbledon, with a knee injury that interrupted her comeback sooner than anticipated. Yet retirement remains off the table for now.
Williams’ coach, Rennae Stubbs, offered an encouraging update this week at Wimbledon, as reported by People. Stubbs confirmed that the tennis legend wants to keep competing in tournaments and has her sights set on the US Open as her next milestone. The ultimate timeline now hinges on a timely and effective recovery.
Her intention is to keep playing; the US Open as well, Stubbs said, expressing optimism about Williams’ rehabilitation progress. The coach believes Williams’ training could resume within a matter of weeks, with immediate priority given to her recovery. Williams sustained a right knee injury during Wimbledon’s opening-round match, a setback that came despite her pushing the match to three intense sets. The injury also forced a difficult decision: Williams withdrew from doubles, where she had planned to pair with her sister Venus Williams.
“She did whisper to me, ‘I would have won if I had a good knee,’” Stubbs revealed. The coach also praised Williams for her pre-tournament form, noting that she had defeated strong opponents in practice, a factor that boosted her confidence heading into Wimbledon.
On social media, Williams shared news of her setback, describing her return to Grand Slam competition as a gift. She expressed disappointment at missing the doubles opportunity with Venus. In a lengthy caption, Serena explained, “The good news is my knee shouldn’t swell or collect that much fluid again. The bad news is that, as hard as I tried, I just wasn’t able to get it ready for doubles.” She added that her knee simply wasn’t ready.
Medical professionals have been monitoring Williams’ recovery as she weighs possible future appearances. There is talk she might request a wildcard entry for another major before the US Open kicks off. Cincinnati and Toronto emerge as likely venues where she could stage a comeback, though her schedule remains entirely dependent on her medical progress.
