​Sheldon High School is leaning on the local community to help support a cause that is near and dear to the heart of one of the school’s students.This week, the Irish girls volleyball and football teams will hold their first-ever “We Are Gold” toy drive nights to support childhood cancer awareness. Sheldon volleyball will host North Eugene at 6:45 p.m. Sept. 8, while the school’s football team will also hold a fundraiser during its 7 p.m. Sept. 11 game against Summit.Toy bins will be available at both games. All donations will go directly to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland.Danielle Bixby, a Sheldon student who is a two-time childhood cancer survivor, is the driving force behind the fundraiser. “She has just always had a dream of giving back to the hospitals that treated her when she got cancer for the first time,” Sheldon cheerleading coach and leadership teacher Shiloh Jackson said of Bixby. “We started in the spring with a toy drive that our leadership class did. Got a ton of toy donations and we just decided to carry it on through the beginning of the school year, through September, in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.”View this post on InstagramA post shared by Danielle Bixby (@uofo_littleduck)Throughout August, Sheldon’s leadership class sold “We Are Gold” T-shirts to further raise funds and shine a light on the cause they are supporting. Those shirts have since sold out. Bixby, Jackson and the rest of the organizers are hoping to pack the bleachers with supporters wearing the T-shirts for both fundraising nights.Bixby and her family have invited childhood cancer survivors and children currently going through treatment to join them at halftime of the Sheldon versus Summit football game so they can be recognized and celebrated.Sheldon’s volleyball players will wear gold ribbons in their hair during their match, while coach Martine Wodke and her staff will sport the ‘We Are Gold’ shirts on their bench. Football coach Tyler Martell and his staff will also wear “We Are Gold” shirts during their game.”It’s been really cool. Both the football and volleyball programs have been so supportive and so willing to do whatever we ask them to do to support this cause,” Jackson said. “It’s been really amazing. We have such awesome coaches at Sheldon who are good at jumping on board with things like this.”After the Sept. 8 ‘We Are Gold’ volleyball match, supporters are encouraged to join the Sheldon cheer and volleyball teams at Papa’s Pizza on Coburg Road. The restaurant is donating 50% of all Sept. 8 proceeds to Sheldon’s leadership class when customers show the flyer associated with the fundraiser.There will be physical paper copies of the flyer available at the volleyball game, too.”It makes me emotional just talking about her,” Jackson said of Bixby. “She’s incredible and she cares a lot about the community. Even with all of the challenges she’s faced, she still shows up to everything she possibly can
