Novak Djokovic was left in a state of shock after Daniil Medvedev was disqualified from their semifinal match at the China Open.Djokovic led Medvedev 7-5, 5-3 in Beijing when the Russian smashed a ball into the crowd in frustration, and it appeared to hit a spectator in the face. After a lengthy deliberation, it was decided that Medvedev would be defaulted from the match and the tournament.ATP veteran Djokovic, who was defaulted from the 2020 US Open for hitting a line judge with a ball, has now shared his immediate reaction to the dramatic incident at the China Open. Having been in a similar situation, he understandably feels sympathy towards Medvedev.Novak Djokovic shocked after Daniil Medvedev is disqualified from their matchSpeaking in his post-match interview with the ATP Tour, Djokovic said of the incident: “A bit of a shock. I am sorry for the person, I honestly did not see what happened. I hope the person is not badly injured but on the other hand I also feel sorry for Daniil.“I know exactly how it feels to be disqualified in a big match. I was disqualified at the 2020 US Open for similar circumstances. I am sure Daniil did not want to do this intentionally and it just happens.“I was three points away from the win. It was a gruelling battle. I really did not want to take this to a third set. It always is a big battle with Daniil and it’s so hard to play him when he is feeling the ball well in slower conditions. But we move on.”It was, of course, an accident from Medvedev, but he arguably left officials with no choice but to default him given that the ball struck a spectator. And it was a moment of madness that will have significant consequences for the Russian, who will lose his ranking points and prize money from the event. Umpire Mohamed Lahyani ultimately delivered the bad news to the Russian, who seemingly accepted his fate.Novak Djokovic delighted to make it through tough China Open drawMeanwhile, Djokovic will move on to yet another China Open final, as he looks to continue his flawless record at the ATP 500 tournament. He now boasts a stunning 33-0 win-loss record at the event, where he has claimed six titles. He said ahead of another final: “I always believe in myself to be frank with you. I felt I played really well in the training session. It’s different when you play an official match. My draw wasn’t very favourable to be honest, played hard matches from the beginning, but it makes the run to the final sweeter. Another final, there is something about Beijing that keeps me going.”Djokovic will meet Alex de Minaur in the Beijing final, with the Australian having led Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 3-2 in their semifinal before the Pole retired hurt. Djokovic and De Minaur have met four times throughout their careers, with the Serbian holding a 3-1 record over his rival. The 39-year-old can be very proud of his efforts in Beijing regardless of what happens in the final, having indeed progressed through a very tricky draw.
