​The Oklahoma City Thunder currently have 14 players signed to standard contracts, leaving Sam Presti with one available roster spot and an opportunity to do the funniest thing imaginable.He could sign Ben Simmons.According to NBA insider Marc Spears, Simmons is attracting interest from multiple teams as he prepares for a potential NBA comeback. One Western Conference team has reportedly offered him a non-guaranteed training camp deal, while Simmons is open to accepting a veteran minimum contract.Oklahoma City should consider entering the conversation.At one point, Simmons was taking the NBA by storm. The former first-overall pick became a three-time All-Star, an elite defender and one of the league’s most unique playmakers. A 6-foot-10 guard capable of defending nearly every position was supposed to become a perennial superstar.Instead, injuries and declining confidence completely changed his career.Simmons bounced between Philadelphia, Brooklyn and Los Angeles before missing the entire 2025-26 season. He has not looked like an All-Star in years, which is exactly why the Thunder could acquire him without accepting any meaningful financial risk.Nobody would expect Oklahoma City to pursue him. That is what makes the possibility so entertaining.However, once the jokes stop, the basketball fit becomes more interesting.The Thunder would not need Simmons to score 15 points or rediscover the player who once dominated in Philadelphia. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren provide more than enough offensive firepower.They would only need Simmons to defend, rebound and create opportunities in transition.His refusal to consistently shoot would create spacing concerns, but Mark Daigneault would not need to play him in every matchup. Simmons could become a situational defensive weapon rather than a featured part of the offense.Oklahoma City also possesses the type of locker room capable of handling the attention surrounding his arrival. The Thunder’s core has already won a championship together, established a strong culture and proven that individual personalities will never become bigger than the team.That gives Simmons something he has lacked for years.He could play without carrying the expectations that once crushed his confidence.At 30 years old, Simmons also brings experience that Oklahoma City’s younger players do not possess. If his body holds up, his defensive instincts and passing ability could still provide value at the end of the roster.The risk would be almost nonexistent. If the experiment failed, the Thunder could simply move on.If it worked, Presti would have transformed another player the rest of the NBA had already dismissed into a useful championship contributor.Everyone would laugh when the move happened. That might be exactly when Presti has traditionally done his best work.
