DUXBURY — The Duxbury High football team spent the first half of Saturday’s game against Silver Lake building a 27-point lead that looked like a fortress, and the second half holding back the gates as the Lakers nearly stormed back to spoil homecoming.Silver Lake junior quarterback Tommy Daigle found his rhythm after the break, but the Dragons (4-1) had the last answer to pull out a 34-19 win. After seeing a 27-0 halftime lead get cut to 27-19, Duxbury finally clawed back momentum from the Lakers when senior Nate Read recovered Silver Lake’s onside kick. The Dragons then bet on Liam Murray’s running ability to provide them some breathing room, and the sophomore sliced through the middle of the Silver Lake defense for a 20-yard touchdown with just over a minute left in the fourth quarter. Senior Joey Day’s kick made it 34-19 to seal the win.Duxbury’s defense then closed it out. On Silver Lake’s final possession, Daigle finally misfired. He had spent the second half slinging passes to receivers like junior Brody Sabel, who finished with more than 100 receiving yards, but this one sailed over senior Cody Hammond across the middle, and sophomore J.R. Pike intercepted it to seal the win. In the first half, Duxbury got on the board by converting on fourth down. Facing fourth-and-5, Murray found sophomore Patrick Martin for an 18-yard touchdown, and Day’s kick made it 7-0 with about 7:30 left in the first quarter. The Dragons cashed in on fourth down again early in the second. Eamon Kane threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Day with 11:43 left in the half, and Day added the kick for a 14-0 lead. Murray then ran 8 yards for a score with 5:18 left, and the kick failed. Kane struck again just before the break, throwing a 21-yard touchdown pass with 33 seconds left, and Day’s kick sent Duxbury into halftime up 27-0. More: ‘Electric’ North Quincy football (6-0) stars bring on lightning in win streakMost of the second half belonged to Silver Lake. Down 27-0, Daigle and his receiving corps swung the momentum. He hit junior tight end Cole Savastano on a 13-yard slant over the middle for Silver Lake’s first score, though Pike stopped junior John Burke short of the goal line on the 2-point try. When Day’s 35-yard field goal attempt missed, the Lakers made Duxbury pay: Daigle lobbed an 11-yard touchdown to Savastano in the corner of the end zone, and senior Declan Kelly’s kick cut the deficit to 27-13. Late in the fourth quarter, Daigle drilled junior Neyson Dos Santos on a crossing route for a 10-yard touchdown after lobbing a graceful fade route to Sabel down Duxbury’s right sideline. “Brody is a competitor who plays both ways and doesn’t come out for a snap. It’s always good for us when he and Tommy are working well together,” Silver Lake coach Mark Killinger said of the Lakers’ second-half surge. Duxbury senior Cole Michelson came up big with a blocked extra point, keeping it 27-19 and leaving Silver Lake a touchdown and a 2-point conversion from tying it.
