​SOUTH BEND — Indianapolis’ new Indiana Fever Sports Performance Center will have a special artistic connection to South Bend.Alex Ann Allen, a South Bend native and muralist, has been selected from a statewide artist call to paint a mural on the center’s north wall, with her signature blend of colorful geometric shapes and realism paying homage to the history of women’s basketball in Indianapolis.According to a release from the Indiana Fever, Allen is a professional traveling muralist with over seven years of full-time experience creating large-scale interior and exterior murals. During her career, Allen has painted more than 200 murals in several states and has received commissions from businesses that include Bleacher Report, Zelle and Verizon Wireless, as well as schools and community organizations.South Bend area residents may also know her for her work as curator of South Bend’s Mural Mania, the city’s annual mural festival, as well as several of her own murals throughout the city, including at Pier Park and, with fellow local artist Lauren Steinhofer, at the South Bend Farmer’s Market. Her work also has been exhibited at the South Bend Museum of Art.More about Alex Ann Allen: Annual Mural Mania festival turns South Bend into a vibrant canvasThe 40-by-60-foot mural Allen will paint on the performance center is titled “Unity, Legacy, Resilience.” The Indiana Fever says it “celebrates Indianapolis as a center of women’s professional basketball while paying tribute to the Indiana Fever.””The design features Allen’s signature vibrant color palette and layered geometric forms that create a striking sense of depth and movement,” the release says. “Positioned on the building’s prominent north wall, the mural will become a highly visible landmark in downtown Indianapolis.”The Indiana Fever says the mural will be painted in fall 2026, with a dedication to follow ahead of the performance center’s opening in spring 2027.Allen was selected out of 65 applicants through a statewide artist call.
