​Sep. 20—With just eight regular-season games left, the seventh-place Spokane Velocity are fighting to make the playoffs for the third consecutive year.After allowing two first-half goals by Jesús Barea, the Velocity rallied to remain in position for a postseason bid in a 2-2 draw with AC Boise at ONE Spokane Stadium on Sunday.Fifth-ranked Boise, an expansion team that has established itself as a top contender — and was rewarded with a promotion to the USL Championship league next season — outshot the Velocity 14-9.Its aggressive offense fired 11 first-half attempts and Boise’s defense held the Velocity to just three shots with nine clearances, as Spokane struggled to maintain possession at a 45% rate.Then, in the 29th minute, Barea easily converted a penalty kick to open the scoring after Lucky Opara fouled Nick Moon inside the box in the 27th.Just before the half, Dominic Gasso connected with Barea at the top-left corner of the penalty area to extend Boise’s lead to two. Barea took three dribbles and tucked a shot that sailed past a leaping Sean Lewis into the opposite corner of the frame.Boise’s two-goal advantage only lasted for halftime and some change, as Luis Gil recorded his fifth goal to tighten the deficit.From center-half, Opara lobbed a pass in front of Gil’s feet, and Gil threaded his shot underneath the arms of Boise keeper Jonathan Kilewer.Two minutes later, Derek Waldeck scored the game-tying goal from the middle of the box, following a cross from Jack Denton.Spokane’s defense notched seven clearances while Boise’s finished with 20.
