Two double plays saved the Police, including Eric Williams spearing a liner and flipping to first with the bases loaded.— Lyon Mountain’s Glen Petrashune became the first Champlain Valley Baseball League player to win the Triple Crown, hitting .500 with five home runs and 23 RBIs. On the mound, he went 7-2 with a league-best 1.16 ERA and 78 strikeouts.— Plattsburgh State ended weeks of speculation, naming Louis Frigon — a former University of New Hampshire scoring standout who most recently coached RPI’s junior varsity — hockey coach and ice director for the 1976-77 season.70 YEARS AGO — 1956— Peru pounded out 22 base hits — five of them home runs — to belt West Chazy, 20-7, in an Adirondack League contest. Bob Bruno started the barrage with a ninth-inning homer, and Harry Demery, Raymond Ledwidth and Leonard Rock followed suit. Pitcher Bob Way later added a two-run shot of his own and went all the way for the win.— Saranac’s Gary Collins, a 13-year-old righthander in the Clinton County Pee Wee division coached by Bob King, racked up 80 strikeouts in 42 innings — nearly two per frame — with two no-hitters, three one-hitters and two two-hitters while going 6-3.— Leonard Passino’s three singles in five trips led Cadyville to a 5-1 win over the PAFB Panthers, with Jim O’Connell striking out six in six-hit ball.
