Sprinter Gout, 18, out for season with hamstring tear

Australian sprinter Gout Gout has been ruled out for the rest of the season, including the World Athletics Under-20 Championships, after tearing his left hamstring during training in Brisbane. The 18-year-old had chosen not to participate in this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, instead aiming to compete in the U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, in August. However, an MRI confirmed a grade-three tear, which will sideline him for the remainder of the year. Gout remains optimistic about a comeback, stating his goal to return “better and faster and stronger” in 2027.
Earlier this year, Gout had made headlines by setting a world under-20 record in the 200m and retaining the Australian Championships U20 title. In April, he clocked 19.67 seconds to break Usain Bolt’s previous U20 benchmark of 19.93, a performance that solidified his standing as one of the sport’s brightest young talents. Bolt himself later commented that Gout should not forget track and field, underscoring the potential he possesses.
On social media, Gout expressed his disappointment while accepting the setback as part of athletics. He wrote: “I’m very disappointed but I have no other possibility but to accept the situation. I understand that this is part of athletics. My focus now will be on my rehab in the coming weeks and months and ensuring I come back in 2027 better and stronger and faster.” A grade-three hamstring tear is a severe rupture that typically requires three to six months, or longer, to heal fully, often necessitating a careful rehabilitation process before returning to competition.
Australian Athletics issued a statement emphasizing that Gout “has a long and exciting athletics career ahead of him.” The organization acknowledged the disappointment for Gout and his supporters while reinforcing that injuries are an unfortunate, inherent part of sport. The statement urged patience as he undertakes rehabilitation, with a plan to resume racing when he is fully ready to compete at his peak again.
Gout’s progress in June also highlighted his continued promise, as he added the U20 100m national title at the Australian Championships to his growing list of achievements. That same period marked his debut at the senior level in the Diamond League, where he appeared at the Bislett Games in Oslo, signaling a bright trajectory once he recovers from this setback. His current focus will be on meticulous rehab, maintaining his training foundation, and preparing to return to competition in 2027 with the drive and form that have already captured the attention of track and field fans globally.
