Spurs Reach £100m Tonali Agreement as Midfield Rebuild Accelerates

Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a deal that could rise to £100million, according to The Athletic. It’s a transfer that feels less like opportunism and more like a statement of intent. Spurs are not merely dipping into the market; they have walked into it with purpose, conviction, and a chequebook large enough to shift the mood in north London. The deal is set to see Tottenham pay an initial £92.5m for Tonali, with a potential £7.5m in add-ons tied to multiple Champions League qualifications. If completed, it would become the club’s record signing, surpassing the potential £85m fee already agreed for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
Tonali would join a midfield that already boasts depth and quality. Conor Gallagher, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, Archie Gray, and Lucas Bergvall remain on the books, although Bergvall has reportedly told the club he wants a new challenge elsewhere. The move makes sporting sense: Tonali brings stature, control, and tempo. He has the legs to cope with the Premier League’s intensity and the intelligence to slow games when required. Tottenham, who have often looked like a team with ideas, now appear determined to add authority and become a true force in the middle of the park.
Free-agent arrivals Andy Robertson and Marco Senesi have already come in, while Jan Paul van Hecke joined from Brighton & Hove Albion for £52m. Add Tonali and Fernandes to that mix, and Spurs are not tinkering at the edges; they are rebuilding the spine of the team.
For Newcastle, selling Tonali would represent a significant return on the £60.5m they paid Milan in 2023, even though losing him would sting. He made 53 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring three goals as Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League and reached the Champions League last 16. His early Newcastle career was interrupted by a 10-month suspension in October 2023 after a breach of gambling rules, but since returning in August 2024, he has made 110 appearances, scoring 10 goals and providing 10 assists. His partnership with Bruno Guimarães became one of Newcastle’s few clear foundations. With Arsenal having seen a verbal bid of under £60m for Guimarães rejected earlier in the week, Newcastle now faces a summer of sustained pressure on their midfield.
Tonali is 26, under contract until 2029 with an option for another year, and is still approaching his peak years. He is not at this summer’s World Cup after Italy failed to qualify, a factor that may allow Tottenham to move with greater clarity and speed. For Spurs, this is the kind of transfer that signals genuine intent and a new era for the club.
