Steelers fans should question this major Mike Tomlin snub

CBS Sports gathered six NFL reporters to rank the 20 greatest head coaches, and Pittsburgh Steelers fans got a glaring omission. Chuck Noll landed at No. 7, a salute to the architect of four Super Bowl champions. Mike Tomlin, though, missed the final list despite one voter placing him No. 20.That omission feels too dismissive of Tomlin’s 19-year run. He finished 193-114-2 in the regular season, tying Noll for the most wins in franchise history. His teams reached the playoffs 13 times, won eight AFC North titles, appeared in two Super Bowls and won Super Bowl 43. He also avoided a losing season every year he coached Pittsburgh, an NFL record to begin a career.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementTomlin’s postseason decline is the obvious reason voters looked elsewhere. Pittsburgh went 8-11 in the playoffs under him, and his tenure ended with seven consecutive postseason losses. The Steelers hadn’t won a postseason game since the 2016 playoffs, and several recent exits were effectively over before they began. Those failures legitimately belong in the evaluation, but they shouldn’t erase Tomlin’s broader coaching job. He guided the Steelers through Ben Roethlisberger’s decline, retirement and a revolving door at quarterback without letting the floor fall out from under them. Plenty of coaches build winning records with a franchise passer, but far fewer keep reaching January after losing one.The comparison gets tougher to defend when Tony Dungy made the list at No. 20. Dungy was a deserving Hall of Fame coach, yet Tomlin won more regular-season games, reached more playoffs and matched his Super Bowl championship total.Noll’s No. 7 ranking reflects Pittsburgh’s greatest coaching era. Leaving Tomlin outside the top 20 treats consistency, adaptability and nearly two decades of winning as secondary achievements, even though those qualities kept the Steelers relevant after their championship core disappeared. This article originally appeared on Steelers Wire: Steelers fans should question this major Mike Tomlin snub
