Michael Whitaker reported on X that the Detroit Red Wings have officially closed the 2026 NHL Draft and will now turn their attention to the annual Development Camp. In a media availability after the draft, Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman and Assistant GM and Director of Amateur Scouting Kris Draper were asked about captain Dylan Larkin’s public trade request from earlier in the month. While Yzerman tried to keep the focus on the team’s latest draft selections, he ultimately confirmed the trade request and warned there are no guarantees it will be fulfilled.
Yzerman explained that shortly after the season ended, he received a call from Larkin’s agent informing him that Larkin would like to be traded. A week later, the agent provided a short list of teams Larkin would consider waiving his no-trade clause to join. He noted that Larkin has five years left on his contract and emphasized that his obligation is to act in the best interests of the Red Wings, with no guarantees about the trade request being granted. There is significant uncertainty about how things will develop, he added, and he confirmed the request but did not promise a resolution, indicating that he may be able to share more specifics in the future while steering the conversation toward the prospects added to the organization.
Larkin remains under contract for five more years with an $8.7 million salary cap hit. The 37th captain in Red Wings history was selected 15th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft by former GM Ken Holland and debuted in October 2015, scoring in his first game. He has hit the 30-goal mark in each of the past five seasons, with a career best of 34 goals in 2025-26.
