Cincinnati denoted a strong offensive night as Sal Stewart drilled two home runs, including one that capped a four-homer fourth inning, while Noelvi Marte drove in four runs and the Reds defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 11-5 on Wednesday evening. Chase Burns (11-1) claimed his 10th consecutive winning decision, though Cincinnati has been inconsistent lately, going 3-7 over their previous 10 games.
Kyle Schwarber continued his torrid pace for Philadelphia, belting his 32nd homer of the season to lead the league, and J.T. Realmuto contributed with a long ball of his own. Stewart leveled the game with a two-run homer to right off Phillies starter Alan Rangel (0-2) in the third, and Cincinnati then became the first team this season to go deep four times in a single inning, a feat the Reds achieved in the fourth.
Marte began the frame with a solo homer to put Cincinnati ahead 3-2. With two outs, Elly De La Cruz followed with a two-run blast to right-center off Tanner Banks, and Stewart and JJ Bleday added solo homers after that to cap the burst. The sequence marked the 15th occurrence since 1961—and the first since 2023—of Cincinnati producing back-to-back-to-back home runs.
Stewart’s two-homer night marked the second such performance this season for him, and he had been named an All-Star just the previous week. Marte also delivered a key hit in the sixth, lining a three-run double to the left-field line with the bases loaded to push the lead to 11-4.
Defensively, Reds center fielder TJ Friedl made a highlight-reel play in the third, sprinting to the wall in right-center and leaping to rob Bryson Stott of extra bases. Offense wasn’t the only storyline for Cincinnati, as Burns endured five innings with an allowed three-plus runs for just the third time in 18 starts. He issued a season-high six walks but tied a season low with two strikeouts in five innings, illustrating a night where control was sometimes an issue but the offense more than made up for it.
Rangel, in his second major-league start, yielded three runs in 3 1/3 innings. The Phillies will hand the ball to LHP Jesús Luzardo (7-4, 3.75 ERA) to duel against the NL’s All-Star selections, while Cincinnati will counter with RHP Brady Singer (3-8, 5.03 ERA) in the upcoming tilt.
