The San Antonio Spurs have won two straight Summer League games, beating the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday for their second straight win. RJ Davis led the Spurs with 20 points, and the Spurs were without first-round picks Jayden Quaintance and Tarris Reed, as well as Carter Bryant. As things currently stand, the Spurs have 13 players on the payroll, meaning they can add two more. In addition, Harrison Ingram, David Jones Garcia, and Emanuel Miller are signed to two-way contracts. Miller is the only one of the trio playing in the Summer League, and Jones Garcia is allegedly fielding offers from European teams.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIf Jones Garcia heads across the Atlantic, the Spurs will have two standard roster spots open and one two-way contract open. Neither Maliq Brown nor Ja’Kobi Gillespie has signed a contract yet. It’s expected that at least one of them will start their careers in Austin on a two-way deal.According to Miller, that’s not a bad thing.READ MORE: NBA Players Not Happy With Victor Wembanyama’s New ContractREAD MORE: Carter Bryant Hints at Role With Spurs Next SeasonREAD MORE: Spurs’ De’Aaron Fox Lands Among NBA’s ‘Worst’ ContractsFor many players, a two-way contract is their best chance to see NBA playing time. However, after the Spurs traded for Emanuel Miller last season, he never made an appearance in San Antonio.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementInstead, he played 13 games for the Austin Spurs, averaging 13.3 points and seven rebounds. In the postseason, two-way players aren’t allowed to suit up, but the team made sure that Miller, Ingram, and Jones Garcia got a playoff experience.Miller is hoping he can use it to grow.”Towards the end of the season, I got thrown into the mix, played a couple of games in Austin, then went into the playoffs with the Spurs,” Miller said. “So it’s a blessing to begin with, and then to learn throughout the playoffs the experience that the veteran guys have and a lot of young guys. Learning from everyone and taking that and applying it to my game, it was helpful.”If the Spurs offer either Brown or Gillespie a two-way deal, they can play in up to 50 NBA games, all in the regular season. As middling second-round picks, their appearances would be limited anyway, and getting the added playing time in the G League would be beneficial.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAccording to Miller, who’s been there before, there’s really no difference between two-way guys and the regular rotation.”We all bring something special to the team, and being able to learn from one another has been helpful,” he added. The Spurs allow their two-way guys to travel with the team, even in contests where they aren’t allowed to play. Not every team does that, but the Spurs understand that even their deepest of depth pieces are an investment. Hopefully this season, the two-way spots pay off.
