​Indiana State’s football team will look to win back-to-back games Saturday as the Sycamores face Pioneer Football League foe Valparaiso at Memorial Stadium.Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.For those not familiar with all the intricacies of regional FCS, the Beacons may be in the Missouri Valley Conference for most sports, but they aren’t for football. In a similar instance, Drake also is in the PFL with the Beacons, while in the MVC for other sports like Valparaiso is. Pioneer League programs don’t offer football scholarships.In a slightly different aspect, the Dakota schools are only in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, not the MVC as their other sports participate in the Summit League.Valpo enters Saturday’s contest with a record of 1-1 with a win over NAIA foe Lawrence Tech, which beat the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Pomeroys 38-28 on Sept. 5. The Beacons then fell to another MVFC foe last weekend, Murray State, by a score of 27-18.The Sycamores (1-2) are coming off a 42-35 victory at Eastern Illinois last Saturday. Prior to that, ISU fell 44-19 at Purdue after opening the season with a 23-21 loss at home to Ohio Valley Conference member Southeast Missouri State.ISU coach Curt Mallory said in Monday’s news conference that while B.J. Wuest shined last Saturday, he thinks the team has done a great job getting the ball out to a lot of offensive weapons.”When you look at the first two games, I think we had seven guys catching balls,” Mallory said. “I think the quarterback situation has done a great job of getting the ball and spreading it out and getting it to our playmakers.”He said the ability to get big plays like the team has had in their first few games needs to continue throughout the rest of the season.The Beacons are the last nonconference opponent for the Sycamores, with Mallory saying the support the team had in the opener was awesome.”We’re going to play at 1 o’clock,” Mallory mentioned. “It’s going to be great weather and we have a great opponent coming in here. So we have to be challenged, but [we’re] really excited to be back home and playing at Memorial Stadium.”Mallory said the Beacons have great players and that on film they do a great job. He called them tough and physical. He said the focus is about going 2-0 after the win over EIU.The Beacons have one main wide receiver in Chris Gundy, who has 113 yards on six receptions.Mallory said the Beacons get the ball in the hands of their receivers in a lot of different ways, including by air and by the jet sweep. A jet sweep is an outside running play where a fast receiver or slot player races across the formation at full speed just before the snap and takes a quick handoff from the QB to attack the edge of the field.”They have playmakers,” Mallory assessed. “We have to do a good job of keeping them in front. They throw the ball a lot. [The Beacons] threw it 40 times last game. So we’re going to have to do a great job of not only pressuring them, but playing good pass defense.”Ma
