Grady Emerson, the Fort Worth Christian shortstop, joined a select group of Dallas-Fort Worth area high school talents chosen among the top 10 picks in a Major League Baseball draft this century when the Tampa Bay Rays selected him with the No. 2 overall pick on Saturday. This makes Emerson the fourth D-FW product to earn a top-10 selection in the modern draft era, following Jesuit’s Jordan Lawlar, who went No. 6 to Arizona in 2021, Colleyville Heritage’s Bobby Witt Jr., who was picked No. 2 by Kansas City in 2019, and Highland Park’s Clayton Kershaw, a future Hall of Fame left-hander who went No. 7 to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2006.
Emerson’s lofty draft position also marks a notable milestone for the University of Texas pledge, placing him in the same elite company as Witt and Kershaw as top-10 D-FW picks of the 21st century. His recognition as a top prospect followed a standout senior season at Fort Worth Christian, where he helped guide the Cardinals to the TAPPS Division II state title game. Emerson posted a remarkable .508 batting average, with 56 RBIs, eight home runs, and 61 runs scored. His speed was on full display as well, with 34 stolen bases in 35 attempts, and he struck out only five times in 161 plate appearances. Defensively, he committed just one error over 147 chances at shortstop, underscoring his well-rounded abilities.
Emerson’s baseball journey has been marked by depth and breadth. He transferred to Fort Worth Christian from Argyle prior to his senior year so he could train under the tutelage of Texas Rangers Hall of Famer Rusty Greer, who has long maintained a close relationship with Emerson through previous skills camps. The left-handed hitter has also accumulated an extensive international resume, having been a four-time USA national team selection and a three-time gold medalist. His international accolades include being named to the All-World team after last summer’s under-18 World Cup in Japan, highlighting his pedigree on a global stage.
As Emerson begins this next chapter, the eyes of scouts and fans alike will be watching to see how his advanced hitting ability, speed on the bases, and polished infield defense translate to the professional level. His draft status signals not only his personal talent but also the continued strength of North Texas high school baseball as a pipeline for top-tier college and professional opportunities. Emerson’s ascent follows a lineage of D-FW stars who have ascended to Major League prominence, and it sets a high bar for the next generation of local prospects.
