Tarik Skubal comes up short in battle of aces as Tigers drop 2nd straight

Detroit’s hitters once again found themselves on the wrong end of a dominant outing from a Philadelphia starter, marking the second straight day of struggle for the Tigers against the Phillies. Right-hander Zack Wheeler carried that dominance Sunday at Comerica Park, pitching six shutout innings as Philadelphia blanked Detroit 5-0 in the series finale. Detroit’s offense offered little against Wheeler, managing only two hits while Wheeler racked up 10 strikeouts and moved to 10-1 on the season with a 2.13 ERA after returning from the injured list.
Catcher Dillon Dingler accounted for one of Detroit’s two hits, while Wheeler overwhelmed the Tigers with his usual efficiency and command. The Tigers, who entered the All-Star break three games back in the American League wild-card race, also faced a mix of prospects and veteran arms in the weeks leading up to the break, but Wheeler’s performance stood out as the defining moment of this series.
Left-hander Tarik Skubal started for Detroit and delivered a solid effort, but he could not match Wheeler’s stingy run prevention. Skubal gave up two runs over 5 1/3 innings and fanned five, taking the loss to move to 5-5 on the season with a 3.09 ERA. He faced a tricky sixth inning after J.T. Realmuto and Bryson Stott opened with consecutive hits to put runners at second and third with one out. Yet Skubal managed to erase a potential rally by striking out Trea Turner with a dirt-eating changeup and forcing Kyle Schwarber to swing through a fastball at the letters, leaving the runners stranded. The starter’s perseverance was evident as he returned for the sixth inning, only to be pulled after Bryce Harper’s infield single extended the threat.
Skubal’s line showed a fastball-centric approach, with 63 strikes among his 92 pitches, and he finished with five strikeouts on a heavy dose of four-seamers and sinkers. He did twice force Schwarber to go down swinging on fastballs and also got Turner to swing over a changeup, while Derek Hill was retired twice by Skubal using a mix of sinkers and changeups. In all, Philadelphia tallied 20 whiffs on 56 swings against Skubal, underscoring Wheeler’s sharpness and Detroit’s inability to string together the timely hit.
The day’s events also included various roster and tactical notes for Detroit. A separate report noted the Tigers’ decision to place left-hander Framber Valdez on the bereavement list, a move that will affect the rotation and depth going forward. Skubal’s strong showing gave Detroit stability in the middle of the rotation, but Wheeler’s virtuoso performance left the Tigers facing a tough path to offense.
As the All-Star break concluded, Detroit stood three games behind the current wild-card leaders, with multiple teams in the hunt for the final playoff spots. The club’s lineup will have some time to regroup and recalibrate, while Wheeler and the Phillies head into the closing stretch with momentum built from a dominant outing and a shutout victory that capped a successful series at Comerica Park.
