Texans Avoided Taking ‘Huge Risk’ With C.J. Stroud

C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans received an unwelcome update from Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, and the news could not have come at a worse time for Stroud as he enters a critical fourth season with Houston. The Texans’ apparent hesitation to extend Stroud may ultimately prove to be a prudent move, given the questions surrounding his trajectory. Since entering the league, Stroud and the Texans have reached the postseason every year, but there are clear indications that Stroud has not only failed to maintain the level of play he showed during his standout rookie season, but may have regressed to a point that should concern the franchise. With uncertainty looming over him, Stroud enters the 2026 season with plenty to prove and little room for more missteps.
In 2025, Stroud threw for 3,041 yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, establishing career-highs in completion percentage and Total QBR while also showing improvements in his touchdown-to-interception rate and passer rating compared to 2024. Yet his deeper issues run beyond those numbers. While fan and media discussions often focus on raw stats, analysts have highlighted a broader decline in efficiency. For example, Sleeper’s Jacob Barzilla noted on X (formerly Twitter) on July 12 that several quarterbacks with better EPA per play over the last two years (minimum 500 plays) outpaced Stroud, including veterans Baker Mayfield, Daniel Jones, Kirk Cousins, Kyler Murray, Mac Jones, and Tua Tagovailoa, as well as 2024 first-round pick Bo Nix. Barzilla suggested that paying Stroud this offseason would have represented a substantial risk for the franchise, emphasizing the strategic importance of Houston’s indecision in a pivotal moment for the quarterback.
Houston did lock in Stroud by picking up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, ensuring control through the 2027 season. Still, another year of regression could jeopardize his fit with the organization, regardless of the financial arrangement. Stroud has acknowledged his own shortcomings on multiple occasions, but his future remains unsettled. As a result, the 2026 season has become potentially pivotal for both Stroud and the Texans.
There is a sense of cautious optimism around Stroud’s prospects. The Texans have taken deliberate steps to bolster his supporting cast, signaling a commitment to giving him a better framework to succeed. This offseason, Houston reworked parts of its offensive line and added significant depth to the skill positions. General manager Nick Caserio also orchestrated a trade to acquire running back David Montgomery from the Detroit Lions, a move designed to bolster the ground game and relieve pressure on Stroud. The combination of a reinforced offensive line and a more complete backfield should, in theory, translate into improved protection, more efficient play-action opportunities, and more manageable third-down conversions.
Analysts from The Athletic have also weighed in, noting the Texans’ offensive-line upgrades and the addition of Montgomery as factors that could contribute to a breakout season. They placed Houston among the teams likely to experience offensive growth in the upcoming campaign, with the expectation that Caley’s system could help Stroud regain the form that made him a compelling rookie prospect. The expectation is that Stroud’s second year under Nick Caley’s offense could yield a rebound, provided he can capitalize on the improvements around him and demonstrate continued development in his decision-making, accuracy, and anticipation.
In summary, Stroud’s 2026 season sits at a crossroads. The Texans’ measured approach to his contract and the surrounding rebuild signal a long-term bet on his potential, but the on-field results will ultimately determine whether Stroud can reclaim the form that initially made him a promising franchise quarterback. If the revamped offensive line and expanded supporting cast translate into tangible gains, Stroud could stabilize his trajectory and lead Houston back toward sustained contention. If not, questions about his ceiling and fit within the organization may intensify, potentially defining the next phase of Houston’s quarterback timeline.
