Texans’ Will Anderson Jr. Raves About Rookie Teammate

Kayden McDonald is already leaving a strong first impression with the Houston Texans. The rookie defensive lineman, selected in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft after the Texans moved up two spots to grab him, has quickly become a notable focal point for a unit already anchored by standout edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. Anderson, widely regarded as one of the NFL’s premier players and a defining figure for Houston’s top-tier defense, believes McDonald will elevate the Texans as a rookie and has openly praised the newcomer for his immediate impact, even though the offseason program is non-contact and pads are not worn.
Anderson emphasized that having McDonald beside him—someone who is eager to learn and push himself—feels like a new energy in the room. He compared McDonald to himself in the early stages of his career, describing the young lineman as someone who pushes for more reps and refuses to settle for less. “It’s been awesome,” Anderson said during his third annual youth football camp. “Now that I’ve got a guy under me, it’s different. I’ve had guys watching me, but having a guy right beside me, someone who wants another rep, it’s exciting. I’m getting older, but this is great for our line.”
Anderson noted that McDonald resembles him in practice and in individual drills, highlighting McDonald’s competitive drive and eagerness to learn. “He reminds me so much of myself,” Anderson added, explaining that he has shared guidance on finding a player’s sweet spot and listening to one’s body, while illustrating what he would do in similar situations. The veteran explained that McDonald has absorbed the lessons quickly and is hungry to prove himself. “He’s soaking it all in, man. He’s learning. He was a great addition for us. He’s going to do great things this year. I can’t wait to see what he does, but he’s a young guy who’s hungry, who’s starving for it.”
McDonald’s arrival gives the Texans a potential interior spark that could bolster a run defense that ranked among the league’s best last season. Houston’s front seven will rely on him to help plug the middle, a key responsibility for a unit that impressed in 2025 by yielding stout results against the run. The interior rotation is already shaping up to be a strength: McDonald slots into a group that features veterans Sheldon Rankins and Tommy Togiai, as well as Naquan Jones among the reserves. Young contributors such as Junior Tafuna and Kyonte Hamilton, along with rookie Dominic Bailey, will provide depth, while defensive end Logan Hall is also expected to rotate inside and contribute.
Physically, McDonald may have limited an offseason program, but his presence and the quick rapport he has established with Anderson signal that he is ready to contribute once pads come on and team drills resume. He joins a defensive line that aims to sustain pressure and disrupt the run game, while also delivering occasional push in the passing game. If McDonald continues to develop at the pace Anderson anticipates, the Texans could have unearthed a pivotal piece for their defensive front—one who can grow into a cornerstone component of their mission to maintain a top-tier defense in the league.
As the Texans prepare for training camp and the regular season, expectations for McDonald are high. The organization and fans alike are eager to see how the former Ohio State Buckeye translates the energy and hustle he showcased in college into rapid on-field impact. If his early impression is any indicator, Kayden McDonald could become a significant driver of Houston’s continued defensive excellence, complementing Will Anderson Jr.’s leadership and helping the Texans solidify their status as a formidable defensive unit in 2026 and beyond.
