​Every NFL roster has one best player who matters most. Your first instinct may lead you to believe this list is populated with lots of quarterbacks. It’s not.The exercise is to go division by division, team by team and single out the best player on each of the 32 rosters heading into 2026. Training camp has started, and these franchises all start anew with the slate wiped clean. Throw out last year’s results! Contracts are signed, some stars got traded, and the upcoming season is a fresh opportunity for a Super Bowl run. Best player on every AFC East teamIt’s hard to argue that quarterback Josh Allen (17) isn’t the best player on the Buffalo Bills. [Corey Perrine/Florida Times-Union]Buffalo Bills: QB Josh AllenBuffalo fired Sean McDermott in January after another earlier-than-expected playoff exit. So the ninth-year passer now works for a new head coach for the first time. Joe Brady is 36 and the youngest coach in the league. Allen also moves into a new $2.1 billion stadium this fall. Meanwhile, the defense switched to a 3-4 under Jim Leonhard and returns only six starters. Allen will have to do more, not less.Miami Dolphins: RB De’Von AchaneMiami stripped the roster down and kept one building block out of the backfield. Achane signed a four-year, $64 million extension in May, then had shoulder surgery. He is cleared and back at full speed for new coach Jeff Hafley. The plan is to run the whole offense through the 5-foot-9 back with Malik Willis under center. That is a heavy workload for a back built on speed, but he can handle it.New England Patriots: CB Christian GonzalezOwner Robert Kraft said publicly that New England offered its cornerback a deal to make him the highest-paid at the position. Weeks later, the two sides still are not close. Gonzalez keeps practicing anyway, matching up daily with new teammate A.J. Brown. Gonzalez allowed 14 completions on 36 targets during last year’s Super Bowl run. He should wait out Devon Witherspoon, another top corner on hold for a new deal, and cash in next spring.New York Jets: S Minkah FitzpatrickNo defense in league history had ever finished a season without an interception. The Jets did it in 2025. So they traded for Fitzpatrick and gave him three years and $40 million. The 29-year-old defensive back picked off a pass on the first day in pads. Head coach Aaron Glenn called him a pro’s pro.
