Instead, they got a franchise left with nothing.The Clippers signed Leonard in 2019 free agency after sending a monster trade package to the OKC Thunder, including future MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and five first-round picks, for Paul George.The NBA announced its punishment for the Clippers’ salary cap circumvention to sign Leonard, confirming that the Clippers have paid dearly for their 2019 gamble.The Clippers lost two MVP trophies and 10 first-round picks for Kawhi LeonardLeonard can be pointed to as the sole reason the Clippers made all the moves that eventually cost them 10 first-round picks.Five were traded to the Thunder for Paul George to incentivise Leonard to sign with them instead of returning to the Toronto Raptors or joining the LA Lakers.Most costly of all, they also gave up SGA, who has become a two-time MVP and led the Thunder to the 2025 NBA Championship. One of these picks became Jalen Williams, who was an All-NBA player in their championship season.Photo by Luke Hales/Getty ImagesThe situation is worse when you factor in that the Clippers also gave up first-round pick swaps to the Thunder, making it a total of seven picks in the deal. Danilo Gallinari was also a part of the trade.The NBA took away the Clippers’ first-round picks from 2029 to 2033 as punishment for their cap circumvention to sign Leonard. This includes the 2029 first-round pick they were due to receive from the Indiana Pacers in the Ivica Zubac trade.What do the Clippers have to show for the Kawhi Leonard era?The Clippers staked 15 years of their franchise from 2019 to 2034 to bring Leonard for a tumultuous seven-year tenure where he averaged 25.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.1 assists in 331 games.Injuries and controversies dampened it, with the furthest the Clippers advanced in the postseason coming with their first-ever Conference Finals appearance in 2021.Leonard missed that series with a torn ACL anyway, playing in a total of three winning playoff series matchups over his tenure.With all that the Clippers gave up to sign Leonard, there is no way one WCF appearance over seven years can be considered worth it.Read more:Stephen A.
