Alexander Zverev winning the US Open title has instigated a massive shake-up on the ATP Tour, which will have huge effects in the year to come. After all, the 2026 season started with him still without a Grand Slam title. Now, less than 12 months on, he has two, more than Juan Martin del Potro and Dominic Thiem, and has tied legends like Lleyton Hewitt and Pat Rafter. It will be interesting to see whether this provides him with the freedom and confidence to still compete when Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are back fit and healthy for 2027.Zverev has said whether he thinks he is the best player in the world right now, but at this moment in time, the ATP rankings do not reflect it.The new full ATP rankings after Alexander Zverev wins the US OpenThe standout narrative after this fine run of form for Alexander Zverev is whether he is any closer to dethroning Sinner as the world number one. After all, the Italian was absent from the US Open and reached the final last year. He lost plenty of points by being unable to play. And yet, the German remains in second, some 1810 points behind the leader.Alcaraz, who also suffered a huge drop as he lost in the quarter-finals at his first tournament back in nearly five months, remains in third, but only just.Ben Shelton is now within 1,000 points of him having jumped five spots into fourth by reaching his first-ever Grand Slam final.Felix Auger-Aliassime has therefore dropped a spot, whilst Daniil Medvedev, now in sixth, has risen two. He is now 12th.How Alexander Zverev can overtake Jannik Sinner to be the year-end world number oneWhilst he may not have done it yet, Zverev is within touching distance of overtaking Sinner and finally becoming world number one.If he were to manage it, the 29-year-old would be the 30th player in Open Era history to ascend to such a level. And, it seems quite realistic.Between now and the end of the season, Sinner has 3,550 ranking points to defend compared to Zverev’s 1,080.This is owed to the Italian winning the China Open, Vienna Open, Paris Masters and the ATP Finals. If he slips at any point, and Zverev manages to convert some of his semi-final runs from last year into titles, he is guaranteed to finish the year as the world number one. It now feels way more likely than not.
