This New England Patriots trade of Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans resolves the crowded wide receiver room, but the return leaves roster questions. In the deal, they received safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round pick.While the writing was on the wall for Boutte getting traded, the Patriots didn’t have to ship him off. If the Patriots’ two preseason games have shown anything, it is their dire need for defensive depth. Against the Colts, they seemed to have developed some depth pieces on defense, but the game against the Eagles proved otherwise. The Patriots’ defense was pushed around by the Eagles’ offensive line and struggled to bring their ball carriers down.Philadelphia’s running backs were pretty productive versus New England. Will Shipley ran for 56 yards on 11 carries with a YPC (Yards Per Carry) of 5.6. Carson Steele ran for 33 yards on 11 carries and caught 6 passes for 84 yards with a touchdown.With the Patriots’ defensive depth up front struggling to stop the run and contain RBs, they needed to add players to this unit. This is something that Patriots Head Coach Mike Vrabel has also noticed.“I don’t think we have a very deep team, so I think we have to make sure that we are preparing our football team,” said Vrabel. The Patriots trading Boutte for defensive depth shouldn’t be surprising, especially considering Vrabel recognized the issue, but the help they needed was in the front seven. So far, the Patriots have yet to generate consistent pressure, fill running lanes, and complete open-field tackles.Instead of getting a linebacker or a defensive lineman, they traded for a S when they already had potential in this position group.
