‘The star is starting to fade’: Concern mounts that Caitlin Clark has lost relevance amid struggles

Indiana Fever point guard Caitlin Clark is, without a doubt, the biggest draw in the WNBA. Since her arrival as the number one overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, the league has experienced record numbers in attendance and television ratings. So great is Clark’s star power that coming into the season, all 44 Fever games this season were slated to be broadcast on national television. However, in a season where her play has been marked by wildly inconsistent performances, including a 4-for-14 shooting performance on Wednesday night, seeing the three-time All-Star and former Rookie of the Year up close has never been more challenging.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementPer a basketball-centric X account, the Fever’s home sellout rate at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Clark’s first season was 80%. Last year, when Clark only suited up for 13 games due to injury, it fell to 40%. This year, the number is just a staggering 15%.The culprit appears to be “outrageous prices.” According to Brobible.com, the “least expensive ticket for the worst seat at Gainbridge Fieldhouse” at Gainbridge was going for $97 in the weeks leading up to the game.Fans on social had strong reactions to the drop in sellouts.“You got what you wanted. Beat up and tear down the one person to bring eyes to this league. This league bragged it had fans and views. Now bragging it’s losing fans,” one fan posted on X.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement“Team barely hanging around .500 that doesn’t promote their best player (Midwest native Kelsey Mitchell) in any meaningful way? weird they’re not selling out more, hmmmmmmmmm?” someone else added.“The star is starting to fade because she ain’t producing,” another fan added. If Clark can turn the season around and help get the Fever back on track and into the top half of the standings, there’s no doubt that fans may be willing to pay the steep prices that Indiana is charging. If not, the Fever may have to hit the drawing board. The post ‘The star is starting to fade’: Concern mounts that Caitlin Clark has lost relevance amid struggles appeared first on The Comeback: Today’s Top Sports Stories & Reactions.
