‘There’s Been Some Conversations’ — Noise Grows Around Maple Leafs Targeting Future Hall of Fame Forward

As the second week of the 2026 NHL free agency period unfolds, the rumor mill is buzzing about a future Hall of Fame forward, with the Toronto Maple Leafs right at the center of the chatter. Patrick Kane, the iconic Hall of Famer in question, remains unsigned after finishing a one-year, $3 million pact with the Detroit Red Wings last summer. Following a productive season in which he tallied 57 points in 67 games, the 37-year-old winger has drawn interest from several playoff contenders, and Toronto is reportedly among the teams that have checked in.
NHL insider David Pagnotta recently offered insight into Toronto’s level of interest, suggesting that discussions have occurred, though nothing is close to being finalized. “I think there’s been some conversations with Toronto, but I think very loose,” Pagnotta said.
The speculation gained momentum around the NHL Draft when Maple Leafs’ first-overall pick Gavin McKenna disclosed that Kane, whom he idolized as a childhood hockey hero, had personally called to offer his congratulations. That brief interaction ignited renewed chatter that Toronto could pursue the veteran forward this offseason.
Beyond the sentimental spark of a personal connection, Kane brings a profile that teams chasing a championship value highly. A three-time Stanley Cup champion and Conn Smythe Trophy winner, he has repeatedly proven his ability to produce under pressure. In recent seasons, he has also shown a willingness to sign affordable one-year deals, making him a relatively low-risk investment from a financial perspective.
Nevertheless, several substantial obstacles stand in the way of Kane donning the Maple Leaf. The primary hurdle is Toronto’s salary cap situation. Although the NHL salary cap rose to $104 million for the 2026-27 season, the Maple Leafs have already signed seven free agents and sit roughly $2.75 million over the cap, leaving scant room to add another veteran without making additional roster moves. On the Leafs’ roster, there is already no shortage of skilled top-six forwards, and their most pressing need is likely to add physical, defensive presences rather than another highly skilled winger, which could make Kane a less natural fit for the current lineup.
Kane, for his part, is reportedly seeking a destination where he can compete for a championship or close out his career in a place that matters to him personally. The Buffalo Sabres have emerged as a compelling option because Kane is a Buffalo native, and the team could benefit from adding a scoring punch after Alex Tuch’s departure. The Chicago Blackhawks are also in the mix, offering a potential homecoming that would reunite Kane with the franchise where he rose to stardom and provide an opportunity to mentor young star Connor Bedard.
Looking ahead, Toronto is expected to keep a close watch on Kane’s situation, but Pagnotta does not anticipate the Maple Leafs engaging in a major bidding war. In this landscape, Buffalo and Chicago appear more probable destinations for Kane, at least in the near term. For Leafs fans and NHL observers alike, the question remains whether Toronto can attract a veteran scorer who could push them further in the playoffs without triggering a costly cap crunch or upsetting the team’s existing chemistry by adding another high-end forward. As the free agency period progresses, all eyes will stay fixed on Kane’s next move and how it could reshape the competitive balance in the Atlantic Division.
