We each carry hopes, desires, ambitions, and dreams, and there are countless ways we’d love this upcoming Dallas Cowboys season to unfold. In a perfect world, and feel free to stop me if you’ve heard this before, this could be the year that finally brings the championship—the one ring to rule them all, the ultimate triumph to Mordor. Yet the reality is often more nuanced. Seasons can take many directions because they rest on a mix of factors and, crucially, on the players who inhabit the roster. There are always a wide range of possible results for these kinds of campaigns, and today our focus is on the player component of the equation.
The Cowboys’ outlook is especially tied to a handful of players who could swing a lot of outcomes. At the top of that list is Shavon Revel, whose development could dictate a great deal about the defense. On some level, I’m willing to believe the Cowboys weren’t aggressive at cornerback this offseason because Christian Parker could provide a meaningful boost to the entire room. His particular skill set might make additional talent less essential, at least in the short term, as a coach’s asset. Yet Revel has to prove he’s the player the team thought they were getting as a bargain last year in the draft. The cornerback position isn’t rock-solid at the top, and Revel now sits in the middle. There’s a plausible path for him to rise to the top by playing at the level Dallas envisioned, but there’s also a real chance he could be another low-cost addition that never fully materializes. This is one of the biggest twists we’ll watch unfold, so the top tier of the cornerback room remains a focal point for the season.
Then there’s DaRon Bland. Last year, it felt like the Cowboys extended him to quell concerns about the trade of Micah Parsons, a pragmatic move that carried significant commitment to a player who has not matched his 2023 form since 2023. It’s unlikely we’ll see the 2023 Bland again, which makes expecting a return to that level less plausible, though not impossible. It wouldn’t surprise anyone if Bland delivered a version close to the 2022 peak, but it would also be reasonable to fear a continued decline. The range here is broad, and that uncertainty colors the entire defensive backfield.
And then there’s Donovan Ezeiruaku, who has the potential to be a standout pass rusher for the Cowboys. In an ideal, perhaps unlikely, scenario, he could be the team’s best pass rusher or even crack a top-10 ranking at the position. Ezeiruaku burst onto the scene during training camp last year, but the full impact of the Cowboys’ defensive overhaul—and the altered dynamic from the Parsons trade—took the air out of that early momentum once the regular season began. We can forgive some early-season missteps as part of the overall transition, but that forgiveness has its limits. Now the defense is constructed differently, and expectations for Ezeiruaku have shifted accordingly. He has an opportunity to become a major factor, but the path requires sustained production in a system that has been retooled to emphasize other strengths as well.
Ultimately, the Cowboys’ season could hinge on how these players progress and adapt within a broader scheme that has evolved since last year. The spectrum of outcomes remains wide—from breakthrough performances to disappointing regressions—but what remains clear is that the player room will largely shape the trajectory of the team’s ambitions. The season promises to be a compelling study in projection, development, and the ever-present question of how much a few individuals can alter the course of a franchise’s fate.
