Thomas Tuchel explains tactical call to remove Declan Rice against Norway

Declan Rice was substituted at halftime as England edged past Norway 2-1 to reach the World Cup semi-finals, and Thomas Tuchel has outlined the reasoning behind the change. The midfielder has endured injury concerns in recent months and has continued to manage his condition while trying to contribute to the team. His workload has demanded careful handling, so substitutions involving him are not unusual.
However, Tuchel stressed that the decision to take Rice off against Norway was not solely about his physical state. He indicated that tactical considerations also played a part as England sought to sharpen their attacking threat in a challenging match. England eventually secured a place in the last four after a demanding contest with Norway. Throughout the game, Tuchel had to make important calls, including substitutions involving Rice and Noni Madueke, as he searched for a way to push his side forward.
Tuchel explained that his aim was to have Bukayo Saka on the pitch and that England needed to become more aggressive after falling behind. Speaking to TalkSport, he said: “I wanted to have Bukayo on the field to finish it. I was not happy with Noni’s performance. It was just a one-on-one and we wanted to get a bit more offensive. I took the decision when we were 1-0 down. I didn’t want to take it back just because of the goal. I wanted to send the signal that we become more offensive. So we needed to take one midfielder off. We knew that Declan was struggling. He gave a green light to continue maybe until the next water break, but then I thought if we go 120 and I don’t have Elliot on the field, we will get into trouble with substitutions later. So we made a hard decision and took Declan off then, which paid off because Elliot could play the full 120, otherwise we would have been in trouble.”
The decision ultimately benefited England, with Rice managed carefully while Elliot Anderson remained on the field for the full 120 minutes. Tuchel believes the move helped the team avoid issues later in the match.
