After USC baseball ace Mason Edwards was drafted No. 47 overall on Day 1 of the 2026 MLB Draft, three more Trojans heard their names called on Day 2, Sunday. Catcher Augie Lopez stayed close to Los Angeles when the San Diego Padres selected the Hermosa Beach, California native with the No. 305 pick in the 10th round. Lopez’s hometown connection means he will remain near home as he begins his professional career. Congratulations to Augie Lopez on being drafted by the Padres and continuing the Trojan tradition.
Lopez spent two seasons with the Trojans. At the plate, he brings notable power and finished the season batting .278 with 19 home runs and 57 RBIs. As a freshman in 2025, he earned a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, highlighting his early impact in college baseball.
In the 16th round, the Pittsburgh Pirates selected sophomore right-hander Grant Govel with the No. 468 pick. Entering the draft, Govel was ranked as MLB’s No. 216 prospect, so he dropped farther than projected. Govel joined the Pirates after a standout 2026 season in which he posted a 2.93 ERA and 96 strikeouts across 98.1 innings, leading USC in innings pitched and ranking second on the team in strikeouts behind Mason Edwards. Govel spent both seasons of his collegiate career with the Trojans, showcasing his development on the mound.
The fourth and final Trojan taken in the 2026 MLB Draft was right-handed pitcher Adam Troy, selected by the Philadelphia Phillies with the No. 519 pick in the 17th round. Troy spent his first two collegiate seasons at Pepperdine before transferring to USC for the 2026 campaign. With the Trojans, he accumulated a 4.28 ERA and 39 strikeouts over 33.2 innings, contributing as a versatile arm out of the bullpen and the starting staff as needed.
Altogether, four USC baseball players were drafted in 2026, underscoring the depth and talent of the program. The coverage and celebrations continued across social media, with announcements highlighting the Trojan connection as the team sent more players to the professional ranks.
