Three-star safety James Branch commits to Auburn over Maryland

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

The Auburn Tigers have added another quality defensive back to their 2027 recruiting class, as three-star safety James Branch announced his commitment to Auburn on Saturday, choosing the Tigers over Maryland, Virginia Tech, and Stanford. Branch’s decision marks the second commitment in July for Auburn’s 2027 haul and brings the total number of pledges in the class to 26.
Heading into the decision, pundits viewed Branch’s recruitment as a tight three-way race among Auburn, Maryland, and Virginia Tech. Maryland appeared to hold the edge before Branch went public, carrying a 34 percent probability of landing him and a single crystal ball prediction from 247Sports. Nevertheless, Auburn ultimately emerged as the destination for Branch, a result some analysts attributed to a deeper, long-standing connection between Branch and the Tigers’ program.
Auburn’s ties to Branch extend beyond the on-field matchup. The Tigers have a notable history with players from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Maryland, Branch’s alma mater. Six members of Auburn’s 2026 roster previously played high school football at St. Frances, and Auburn has signed four players from that school since 2024. This pipeline appears to be paying dividends, contributing to Auburn’s growing influence and familiarity with Branch as a prospective contributor to the program.
With Branch aboard, the 2027 Auburn recruiting class now sits at 26 total commitments. He joins fellow pledges who play on the defensive side of the ball, including EDGE rushers James Pace and Rion Jackson, and safety Knyair Crumb, all part of Auburn’s growing 2027 cohort that includes several players from Maryland. Branch’s arrival strengthens Auburn’s defensive backfield depth at a time when the program is prioritizing versatile, playmaking defenders to complement its evolving scheme.
In terms of ranking and evaluations, Branch carries a 0.8767 composite rating from 247Sports, placing him just behind wide receiver Cedrick Simmons as the 19th-ranked pledge in Auburn’s class. Nationally, Auburn’s 2027 class held the No. 11 ranking prior to Branch’s commitment. Branch also ranks as the No. 12 player from Maryland in the 2027 cycle and sits as the No. 39 prospect at his position nationally, underscoring his status as a solid contributor with potential to grow within Auburn’s system.
As Auburn continues to refine its 2027 class, Branch’s addition signals both immediate depth and future upside at safety and defensive back. The Tigers will likely continue to evaluate versatile defensive backs who can contribute in coverage, run support, and the discipline required by Auburn’s defensive schemes. The coaching staff’s ability to recruit from established high school pipelines, such as St. Frances, could further solidify Auburn’s advantage in attracting talented defenders in the coming cycles.
