At this point, it feels unlikely that Jonathan Kuminga will resume his NBA career with the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks declined his $24.3 million Team Option (TO). Now, he’s an unrestricted free agent. In a sense, the fact that he last played with the Hawks is now rendered meaningless. In theory, Kuminga could end up anywhere.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIn practice, only so many teams have cap space. For that matter, only so many teams will have the appetite for Kuminga’s potential when he’s this deep into his NBA career with such limited proof of concept.Still, these 3 teams seem like strong candidates to wrestle him from the Hawks.Might as well start with the obvious. The Lakers are by far the team most frequently linked to Kuminga. The latest rumors suggest that Kuminga is waiting until the ink is dry on LeBron James’ next deal before finalizing the new partnership. There’s some logic in the acquisition. With Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, Walker Kessler, and Kuminga, the Lakers would have a young core in place. Kuminga is the type of athletic play-finisher who should be maximized alongside Doncic as well.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementYet, from Kuminga’s vantage point, that’s the downside, he’ll be relegated to play-finishing duties on this roster. He could thrive in that role, but if he wants more responsibility, he may want to talk to one of the next two teams. He could still live in California if he went with the next one. It’s time for the Kings to usher in a new era of basketball.DeMar DeRozan is gone. Zach LaVine and Domantas Sabonis remain, but it’s safe to assume the Kings are open to moving either. This organization will look to reimagine their roster around Darius Acuff Jr. as soon as possible.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIt’s easy to envision Kuminga alongside him. The play-finishing via cutting and the pick-and-roll remains relevant here, but a less talented Kings roster could give him more leeway as a shot creator. Kuminga’s had limited success in that role so far, but at 23, he still has room to grow.Like the Kings, this next team could afford him that room. The Nets seem to have a type. Their drafting habits suggest that they value length and positional size.As a 6-foot-7 forward, Kuminga fits well enough. It’s a bit harder to discuss basketball philosophy here, as the Nets don’t have a defined identity. That said, if Mikel Brown Jr. looks like a cornerstone early, a wing like Kuminga would be a great complement.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIn any case, it feels like Kuminga has two paths ahead of him. He could join a team with an established hierarchy and settle into role player status, or continue trying to develop into a star on a rebuilding squad. For now, it doesn’t look like he’ll be doing either on the Hawks.Hawks Roundtable also offers a fan community and message board.
