Tigers Sweep the A’s with a New Face Stepping Up

Framber Valdez set the tone from the start, cruising through the Tigers’ lineup by striking out the side in the opening frame as he dispatched Joshua Kuroda-Grauer, Nick Kurtz and Shea Langeliers in order. It was a crisp, efficient first impression for a start that would prove exactly what Detroit needed. Valdez would go seven innings, allow a single run, and keep Oakland from mounting sustained pressure beyond two midgame threats, giving the Tigers stable length and a manageable bullpen load.
Jake Rogers, batting lower in the order but delivering the spark Detroit craved, changed the momentum in the third inning. After an injury delay and a couple of sharp Oakland defensive plays, Rogers turned on a solo shot to left for his third homer of the season, pushing Detroit ahead 1-0 and continuing a productive night for the Tigers’ catcher, who also drew a pair of walks and reached base three times.
Oakland responded to knot the game at 1-1 in the fifth. Jacob Wilson opened the frame with a single, Lawrence Butler was hit by a pitch, and Colby Thomas moved Wilson to third with a flyout. Henry Bolte then grounded into a forceout, allowing Wilson to score. Valdez dodged further trouble by getting Alika Williams to ground out, preserving the tie heading into Detroit’s turn at bat.
The Tigers countered in the bottom half, starting with a Kerry Carpenter walk. Zach McKinstry canned a two-run homer to right-center, his fourth of the season, extending Detroit’s lead to 3-1 and returning the game to Valdez’s control on the mound.
Oakland again tested Valdez in the sixth. Langeliers and Jonah Heim singled with two outs, placing the tying run in scoring position. But Valdez wrangled the threat with a strikeout of Wilson on a foul tip, keeping the score at 3-1. He returned for the seventh and capped a standout night with another superb frame, striking out Butler, getting Thomas to ground out, and then fanning Bolte to seal the inning.
Valdez’s final line underscored the effectiveness of his night. He provided Detroit with innings of work, produced swing-and-miss results, navigated traffic with control, and kept the Tigers’ bullpen from being stretched thin. His performance also kept Detroit’s defense engaged, as Kevin McGonigle made several crucial plays at third, Hao-Yu Lee handled second base cleanly, and Spencer Torkelson finished the night at first with solid, reliable defense.
Then came the defining moment that would be etched in Tigers lore. In the seventh, pinch-hitter Eduardo Valencia batted for Carpenter and didn’t waste a moment. He lined a center-field pitch into the outfield for his first career home run, a landmark moment that also marked Valencia’s first major-league at-bat. In Tigers history, he joined an exclusive club as the 10th player to homer in their first MLB plate appearance. The homer extended Detroit’s lead to 4-1 and provided the exclamation point on a game that highlighted not only Valdez’s command and the offense’s timely power but also a moment of pure magical MLB history for Valencia. The jubilation in the dugout after Valencia’s blast captured the emotional resonance of the night and gave Detroit a memorable win at Comerica Park.
