The Minnesota Timberwolves made a bold move this offseason. With Anthony Edwards still young but rapidly entering his prime, the franchise evidently felt the moment was right to pursue a major shakeup. The result was a significant four-team trade that sent Julius Randle away and brought in a blossoming star point guard in LaMelo Ball. Randle had joined Minnesota ahead of the 2024-25 season in a high-stakes swap that sent former No. 1 overall pick Karl-Anthony Towns to the Knicks in exchange for Randle, a trade that carried substantial risk for a club coming off a deep playoff run to the conference finals. Still, the Wolves managed to reestablish themselves in the postseason in Randle’s first year with the team.
After the four-team deal involving Minnesota, Chicago, Charlotte, and Brooklyn was finalized on Friday, the Timberwolves publicly bid farewell to Randle on social media, pairing that farewell with appreciation for the three-time All-Star forward. At the same time, Minnesota officially welcomed Ball, the 24-year-old star point guard who is expected to help transform the team’s backcourt into one of the league’s best. In the blockbuster trade, Minnesota sent Randle to the Nets as part of a salary-shedding maneuver. Unsurprisingly, the team didn’t stop there, and a subsequent move followed the departure of a star who had contributed at an All-Star level. Ball’s addition could alter how the Timberwolves function, potentially shifting the balance of the lineup without necessarily making the team categorically better or worse, but certainly with the potential to change the dynamic in Minnesota’s backcourt.
