Timberwolves officially ties with declining $100 million ex-Lakers, Knicks forward via four-team trade

The Minnesota Timberwolves have officially moved on from a declining former Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks forward after two seasons with the organization, as reported by The Sporting News. The Timberwolves completed a major four-team, LaMelo Ball-centered deal on Friday, sending the 31-year-old veteran to the Brooklyn Nets. According to the team’s press release, Minnesota acquired guards LaMelo Ball and Josh Green from the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for forward Naz Reid, a 2033 first-round pick, three second-round picks, and three future first-round pick swaps.
As part of the four-team arrangement involving the Brooklyn Nets and Chicago Bulls, Minnesota will also receive the draft rights to guard Isaiah Evans from the Nets, with that acquisition coming in exchange for forward Julius Randle and the draft rights to forward Joshua Jefferson. While Randle had been a high-level contributor in the regular season for the Timberwolves, his postseason performance did not meet expectations. During the 2025 playoffs, the Kentucky product displayed inconsistent scoring against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals, contributing to a 4-1 series defeat.
In the 2026 Western Conference Semifinals against the San Antonio Spurs, Randle’s performance was notably poor on both the perimeter and in the low post, as he struggled to execute decisive moves and minimized the impact of his turnover-prone tendencies. Across Minnesota’s 4-2 series loss, Randle averaged 12.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 3.0 turnovers, while shooting 34.2% from the field and 19.0% from three-point range. It became clear that the Timberwolves would not realize their potential with Randle as a top-three scoring option, which helped explain why the organization chose to move on from him.
The trade landscape around the league continues to evolve, with additional NBA developments noted, such as reports that the Heat outbid the Celtics for a generational, $175 million, 10-time All-Star and two-time MVP, and headlines about players like Dalton Knecht exploring Summer League paths amid trade rumors. As teams adjust their rosters and strategies, the conversation around roster construction and salary cap management remains a central theme for organizations aiming to maximize their championship windows.
