Top 2027 recruit A’Zyua Blair has committed to UCF, she told Rivals. The 5-6 point guard from Houston (TX) Christian High School chose the Knights over offers from Houston, Baylor and Virginia, amongst others.“The overall feel and vibe I got from the staff and the team,” Blair told Rivals of why she chose UCF. “It definitely felt like home there and somewhere I could see myself thriving in the future. I’m a relationship person, so that was one of the big things for me on my list. But overall with UCF, the staff — they just checked all the boxes. I’m very grateful that I could find a home in it.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThere were plenty of factors Blair was considering in her decision.“Definitely relationships and playing early,” she said. “I want to come into college and make as big of an impact as I can as a freshman. I feel like UCF is definitely going to give me that opportunity. Also, the conference — I like the Big 12. I feel like it’s definitely on the come up and I feel like I could become Big 12 Freshman [of the Year] one day. That’s definitely a goal of mine. I think UCF will help me with that. The development piece is huge for me, coming from high school to college. I went and watched their practices and workouts during the visit and it was great. It was definitely somewhere I feel like I could fit and fit was a big one for me as well.”Head coach Gabe Lazo is entering year one of his tenure at UCF and starts it out with a big get on the recruiting trail. Blair noted that her relationship with Lazo played a significant part in her decision.“He was originally recruiting me at Tennessee,” she said. “When he moved and got the head [coach] job at UCF, he immediately offered me, which I thought was great to see because it showed that he was loyal. The fact that he came and got me when he got the head coaching job, it honestly just meant a lot. It showed how much he definitely believes in me and cares for me. Even when I went on the visit, I could tell how much he cares for his staff and his girls, so it was great to see. Going and meeting the other assistants, it just felt so natural. I think my family and I were definitely comfortable and we saw that they really had a need and a want for me there.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAlthough they haven’t played a game in the Lazo era quite yet, Blair told Rivals that the style of play will fit her well.“He told me they’ll definitely play fast,” she said. “He said he likes to space the floor so everybody has equal opportunity to score. They’re big on defense, which I love because a lot of teams just harp on the offensive side. I love to see that because I feel like I’m one of the best defenders in the country. He talked to me about how I could come in and make an impact. He believes in small guards a lot.”
