Jul. 15—Justin McCoy is hoping his performance at last weekend’s UI Players Cup leads to big things. Like a spot on the U of I Community Credit Union scramble team.”I think he’s got that,” UICCU CEO and playing partner Chris Harlan said. “We’re going to have to go on an industry tour and clean up.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementA former three-time News-Gazette All-Area Boys’ Golfer of the Year from Champaign Central, McCoy since March has been at UICCU as a commercial loan administrator. He had never golfed with Harlan, in charge since 2018, before last weekend’s two rounds at the U of I Orange Course in Savoy. The duo won the championship flight by 2 strokes over Ian Tate and Adam Rebholz.”It was a blast,” said Harlan, who golfed at Centennial and Parkland and plays at Champaign Country Club. “I was very impressed with his maturity on the course and in life in general. He has a good head on his shoulders.”McCoy — winning for the first time on his home course — was thrilled by Harlan’s invite, returning from vacation in Colorado just in time for Saturday’s opening round.”It’s the big boss and there were some nerves,” McCoy said, “but more than anything, I was excited to show that I was more than just an asset on the business side.”
