Toronto Raptors Could Retain Brandon Ingram, Sign Kawhi Leonard If This Happens

Kawhi Leonard’s highly anticipated return to the Toronto Raptors has stalled as the NBA pauses the blockbuster deal while scrutinizing the Clippers’ alleged salary cap circumvention. The trade, which would see the two-time Finals MVP head back to Toronto, is currently on hold as league investigators continue their review of the Clippers. Getty images accompany the report, with Leonard reacting during a game for the Clippers as whispers of a trade to the Raptors circulate.
According to Michael Grange, the Raptors’ longtime reporter for Sportsnet, there remains a path in which Toronto could retain the assets they surrendered in the agreed-upon deal and still land Leonard, while keeping Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and their draft capital intact, should the league determine that Leonard’s contract should be voided in connection with the Aspiration scandal involving the Clippers. Grange suggested on X that if Leonard’s contract is voided — an outcome he views as unlikely but not impossible — the trade could be nullified, with Ingram, Dick, and the draft picks returned to Toronto and Leonard becoming a free agent, theoretically free to rejoin the Raptors.
The so-called Aspiration scandal alleges that the Clippers circumvented the league’s salary cap by channeling off-the-record payments to Leonard via a third-party entity. The conflict first emerged after the Raptors chose to pause finalizing the deal, following the league’s decision to place the burden of any potential outcome from the investigation on Toronto. The possibility, however remote, that Leonard’s contract could be voided would upend the agreement: in that scenario, the trade would be called off, and Leonard would negotiate a fresh path, potentially signing with the Raptors if the paperwork aligned with league rules.
If the current arrangement were invalidated, Leonard would likely have to sign with the Raptors under a mid-level exception to fit Toronto’s salary structure, especially given the team’s willingness to absorb the contracts for Ingram and Dick again. The NBA’s investigation into the Leonard–Clippers situation has dragged on since it was initially reported by investigative journalist Pablo Torre last year, and thus far no final resolution has been announced. Leonard, who is under contract for one more season with $50.3 million on his upcoming deal, remains a two-time NBA Finals MVP and a former Raptors icon who helped deliver Toronto’s first-ever championship in 2019 by defeating the Golden State Warriors.
If he does return for another season in Toronto, Leonard would join a young, hungry core led by Scottie Barnes, a group that showed promise during the previous campaign. The latest developments come as the Clippers’ proposed blockbuster trade to reunite Leonard with the Raptors sits in limbo, with both teams awaiting a decisive ruling from league investigators.
The story continues to evolve as the league’s inquiry into the Clippers’ financial practices unfolds. For now, the trade remains paused, and Raptors fans and NBA observers alike watch closely to see whether the deal will move forward, be reworked, or dissolve entirely in the face of potential contractual voids or other league actions. The outcome could redefine Leonard’s career trajectory and the composition of the Raptors’ roster in the near term, especially if Toronto must navigate a mid-level exception route to keep him in a reimagined lineup for the upcoming season.
