Toronto Raptors put Kawhi Leonard trade on hold after NBA league office message

By admin — In News — July 9, 2026

The Toronto Raptors have opted to delay their trade for Kawhi Leonard in light of the NBA’s ongoing investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers. The probe centers on a $28 million endorsement arrangement between Leonard and Aspiration Fund LLC, a matter that has cast a cloud over the potential deal. Reports have alleged that Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, through the now-bankrupt Aspiration entity, used the arrangement in a way that skirted the league’s salary-cap rules. As the situation stands, the Raptors have concluded that any punishment Leonard might face, should the league determine one, could ultimately affect them if the trade proceeds.
In a formal statement issued after deciding to pause the trade until the investigation reaches a resolution, the Raptors explained, “The NBA league office informed us that, as a result of the ongoing investigation involving the Clippers, we would assume the risk of any potential outcome of the investigation impacting Kawhi.” They added, “In light of this, we will wait until the league’s investigation is complete. The Raptors remain eager to bring Kawhi back to Toronto and look forward to a swift resolution for our players, our organization, and our fans.”
The Clippers responded with a statement of their own, insisting they will be cleared of wrongdoing once the process concludes. Their message emphasized ongoing transparency: “While the process has been challenging, we have remained committed to transparency. The investigation is ongoing, and we expect the trade to be finalized following its conclusion.” They reiterated that the core issue revolves around Aspiration and Joe Sanberg, and insisted they did not channel funds to Kawhi Leonard through Aspiration. “We recognize the uncertainty this has created and the impact it has had on our team, our fans, the Raptors organization, their fans, and the players whose futures remain affected while this process continues. We remain confident that, when the facts are evaluated fairly and thoroughly, the NBA will confirm exactly what we have said from the beginning: We have not done what we are accused of doing.”
Among the players awaiting a final decision on the Leonard trade are Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick, two Raptors players who would be involved in any outcome of the deal. On the Clippers’ side, the franchise is set to receive multiple draft assets: two first-round picks (2021 and 2033), a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks. The Raptors, prepared to make a substantial commitment to Leonard, have chosen to proceed cautiously, prioritizing a careful return that aligns with the potential league sanction’s timing and scope.
As the situation unfolds, both teams maintain a shared interest in clarity and resolution that can stabilize their rosters and satisfy their fan bases. The Raptors’ decision to postpone reflects a broader reality of modern NBA trades, where league investigations can redefine the value and risk of a blockbuster deal. The outcome remains uncertain, but both franchises have signaled a commitment to pursuing Kawhi Leonard, albeit within the bounds of the league’s forthcoming determination.
