PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp outlined dramatic changes to the Tour’s structure ahead of the Travelers Championship, announcing that beginning in 2028 the Tour will implement its most significant overhaul in decades. The plan introduces two tracks – a Championship Series and a Challenger Series – designed to bring more schedule certainty and a promotion/relegation system. In short, the shift aims to clarify where players will compete and when, while offering fans a clearer view of which events will feature the top players.
opinions across the staff were mixed but generally positive. Josh Sens notes that the overhaul doesn’t solve the core issue of players feeling they’re paid above their market value, but it does improve top-level clarity and the predictability of the schedule for players and fans. He also approves of the streamlined number of main events and the move toward a match-play format to decide the season-ending playoff winner, calling it a welcome change that could inject more excitement into the season.
Josh Berhow acknowledges initial skepticism but grew hopeful as details emerged. He appreciates that every event will have a defined status, allowing fans to know in advance when they’ll see certain stars like Scottie Scheffler. He views the introduction of a match-play component as a timely enhancement that could generate marquee matchups and more energy on tour.
Josh Schrock agrees the proposed shakeup is a necessary step to simplify the Tour’s complex, large-stakes schedule. He emphasizes that promotion and relegation provide clear incentives and easy-to-understand stakes for every tournament, and that a well-defined structure benefits players and fans alike. He believes the new system could also improve the Tour’s search engine visibility by delivering a clearer, more coherent season narrative.
