Training Camp Preview: Zxavian Harris

The New Orleans Saints have a great history of finding undrafted gems that can fill positions throughout the roster, and it is one of the biggest advantages in football. Money is everything in sports, and with a salary cap looming over all decisions made by a team, utilizing that money in a really smart way can put you above other teams. Undrafted free agency is one way to make that happen, and it’s arguably the best way.Instead of signing cheap veterans that can fill roles and step up, undrafted free agency is younger players that are on even cheaper contracts. It’s not easy to find good players each year, and the Saints are not even able to do that every season, but even finding one every 3-4 years can do wonders for roster building. For example, the Saints signed Carl Granderson from undrafted free agency, and if that never happened or if the Saints never brought him onto the 53-man roster, imagine what the pass rush would have looked like last season. Besides Chase Young, Cam Jordan would have been the only starter left.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAgain, this is just one of the many examples I could have made for the Saints, and hopefully this season can have another one of those succesful undrafted free agents that surprises many on the outside, but shocks nobody in the building.Looking around the roster, the person who stands out as the perfect oppurtunity is Zxavian Harris. Out of Ole Miss, Harris is a mind-boggling 6-foot-8 DT who has incredible length and had success in the SEC. From just that explanation, it would make sense if you thought Harris was at least a second-round pick, but obviously, we would not be talking about him today if he were. Harris had off-the-field concerns and injury issues that caused him to have day 3 projections, but he ended up falling even further, all the way to undrafted free agency. But, even with these issues, he’s the ultimate project. All the potential in the world, but it just needs to be put together on and off the field. If the Saints have full trust in him, he can stay out of trouble and come back healthy (he is currently injured), and the Saints may need to bring him on the roster just in case he reaches his potential. It’s a low risk/extremely high reward project that could completely transform the Saints’ DT room if successful.
