Trey Beard selected by Miami Marlins in the 2026 MLB draft

FSU pitcher Trey Beard has been selected by the Miami Marlins with the No. 147 overall pick in the 2026 MLB draft, marking him as the Seminoles’ first draft choice on Sunday and the fourth overall pick in the event so far. Beard, who transferred to Florida State from FAU, served as the No. 2 starter for the Seminoles in his lone season with the program. The left-hander fashioned a 6-1 record with a 3.59 ERA over 77 2/3 innings of work, surrendering 62 hits and 38 runs, walking 26, and striking out 123 batters. His performance on the mound contributed to a standout season for FSU, and he quickly drew attention from scouts and analysts across the college baseball landscape.
In mid-March, Beard earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors after a dominant six and one-third innings against Wake Forest. He allowed just one hit and one walk in that outing, amassing a career-high 14 strikeouts and guiding the Seminoles to a decisive win. Beard’s most memorable outing of the season may have come in the final game of the season, a do-or-die matchup against Coastal Carolina. A rain delay that halted Wes Mendes’s outing left Beard to finish the game, and he delivered four scoreless innings without allowing a run while Florida State captured a 2-1 victory. He struck out nine and yielded only one hit in that crucial relief performance, underscoring his ability to perform in high-pressure situations.
Born in Dunedin, Florida, Beard began his collegiate career with the FAU Owls, where he spent two seasons and established himself as one of the top pitchers in the transfer portal. As a sophomore at FAU, he earned a spot on the All-ACC First Team after going 7-1 with a 3.14 ERA in 86 innings, while recording 118 strikeouts against 32 walks. His success at FAU made him a highly sought-after transfer, and he made a smooth transition to Florida State, where he immediately contributed as a key member of the rotation.
Beard becomes the second Florida State pitcher to hear his name called in this draft, joining Wes Mendes as members of a wave of Seminoles selected. The Marlins’ selection of Beard is part of a broader draft narrative that has included several FSU pitchers, underscoring the program’s continued ability to develop and showcase talent at the next level.
