The Toronto Blue Jays dropped another tight contest on Saturday night, losing 8-7 to the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. With this result, Toronto falls to 45-50 on the season, placing them fourth in the American League East and leaving them trailing the Red Sox, who have been gaining momentum. The Padres slipped to 47-48 as they navigated a game filled with pitching and hitting miscues.
Both starting pitchers endured rough outings. Trey Yesavage, usually a reliable part of Toronto’s rotation, lasted just 1.2 innings. He allowed one hit but surrendered four earned runs and issued seven walks, a performance that didn’t earn him a decision as the loss went to Mason Fluharty. Yesavage’s ERA swelled to 3.72, underscoring the inconsistency of a promising young arm. Opposing him, Walker Buehler had a short start as well, lasting only two innings and giving up four earned runs on three hits while walking four. The two starters combined for 11 or more walks and 11 or fewer outs, a rare outcome in the Modern Era, according to OptaSTATS on social media.
Despite the rough night in San Diego, the 22-year-old Yesavage has delivered a solid first half. After beginning the season on the injured list, he has gone 4-4 with a 3.72 ERA across 14 starts. He has punched out 69 batters in 75.0 innings, and there’s reason to believe he’ll continue to grow stronger in the second half of the season. The Blue Jays will need that progress if they hope to make another push for the playoffs, currently sitting 1.5 games back of the Seattle Mariners in the wild-card race.

Looking ahead, Toronto will attempt to rebound in the finale of the series on Sunday, with a 4:10 p.m. ET first pitch. Kevin Gausman will start for the Blue Jays, opposite San Diego’s German Marquez. Gausman enters Sunday at 4-8 with a 4.32 ERA, while Marquez sits at 4-2 with a 5.02 ERA.
Prior to Sunday’s action, the MLB Futures Game will take place at 12 p.m. ET in Philadelphia as part of All-Star Week, with two Blue Jays prospects slated to participate. Nolan Perry and JoJo Parker will represent Toronto at Citizens Bank Park, highlighting the organization’s growing depth of young talent.
Sunday also marks the conclusion of the MLB Draft, which began on Saturday. The Blue Jays will continue their selections from Rounds 5 through 20, aiming to infuse more high-upside talent into the farm system. The club already made three picks on Day 1, and additional coverage on those selections can be found in our ongoing updates.
