Trinity Byars signs new contract with San Diego Wave through 2028

San Diego Wave announced on Thursday morning that they have extended forward Trinity Byars on a new contract through the 2028 season, locking in a key part of their attack beyond 2026 when her previous deal was set to expire, making her an unrestricted free agent. “My time in San Diego thus far has been incredible and I’m really excited to continue my career with this club,” Byars said in a statement. “I’m grateful to the team for the trust they’ve placed in me and I’m looking forward to continuing to grow while helping San Diego however I can in order to win a championship together.”
Byars has played a pivotal role for the Wave in 2026, contributing significantly despite having only one start this season. In nine appearances, the dynamic forward has found the back of the net four times for the league-leading team, while also challenging opposing defenses late in matches. At 23 years old, Byars was among the first players from the University of Texas to sign with an NWSL club without going through a college draft in November 2024. She initially faced a serious knee injury in her senior year, yet the Wave still signed her and immediately placed her on the season-ending injury list.
Her return came as she became available for selection in the Wave’s final 2025 regular-season game, and she later debuted as a late substitute in the Wave’s NWSL playoff loss to the Portland Thorns. “Trinity is an important part of this club, and we’re excited to have her continue her career in San Diego,” General Manager and Sporting Director Camille Ashton said in a statement. “She has consistently demonstrated her quality in front of goal and her ability to deliver in key moments, and we look forward to seeing her continue to make a significant impact for this club in the years ahead.”
The Wave’s next match is scheduled for Saturday, July 11, at home, where they will host Southern California rivals Angel City FC. This contract extension not only secures Byars as a long-term piece of the squad but also signals San Diego’s commitment to building a powerful offense around her creative and scoring abilities as they pursue continued success in the NWSL through 2028.
