​Three Binghamton natives, each uniquely influential in their contributions to the baseball community, will be inducted into the Binghamton Baseball Shrine at Mirabito Stadium this weekend.Former Major League pitcher Joel Bennett, former Binghamton Mets team president Michael Urda, and long-time team chaplain Tom O’Connor – the first chaplain to be inducted – will be honored as the Binghamton Baseball Shrine’s  30th induction class ahead of the Binghamton Rumble Ponies’ home game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 5.The pregame induction ceremony, voiced by local broadcasting legend Roger Neel, will begin with highlighting Urda, O’Connor and Bennett’s impact on the Greater Binghamton community since 1993.More: 2026 LUMA features America 250 event, immersive dining experienceBennett, a Windsor Central High School graduate, was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 21st round of the 1991 Major League Baseball Draft from East Stroudsburg University. He later went on to debut for the Baltimore Orioles (1998) after winning 53 games at the minor league level.The former baseball star is better known to the Windsor community as Mr. Bennett and Coach Bennett, having worked as a physical education teacher in the Windsor Central School District since 2002 and coached middle school and high school baseball for more than 20 years.Bennett was also inducted into the Greater Binghamton Sports Hall of Fame in 2024.Mike Urda, a graduate of Binghamton Central High School, has had his own unique impact on baseball in the Binghamton community.More: Look inside nearly $30 million Binghamton University gym expansionAside from owning the Binghamton Mets for 20 years, Urda remained adamant about growing baseball in Binghamton, playing a key role in keeping the franchise in Binghamton despite recurring talks of relocation.He also oversaw many of the ballpark’s improvements, including the installation of new technology.O’Connor, who has served as the Binghamton Rumble Ponies’ team chaplain since 2003, played a key role in offering support to the players, coaches and team staff.His pastoral care and commitment to the Binghamton baseball community have made him a significant figure and one of the first chaplains enshrined in the Binghamton Baseball Shrine.Fans can purchase tickets to the game on the Binghamton Rumble Ponies website, found here.
